Immediate success follow- ed the introduction o4 suitable varieties and corn is now Being grown as a llimplementsryrfpra crop on most dairy farms. Almost every year there ls a period in late sumper and early fall when pas- tures beccme dry, and milk pro- duction falls off unless some form of succulent feed is provided. Annual pasture and late seeded oats for green feed are useful during the early part of the per- iod, hut corn and white-fleshed turnlpsare preferable during the latter part. Corn, like turnips. produces large quantities of feed and the nature c4 its maburity is such that it is suitable for feed- ing over an extended period. The feeding value of com increases rapidly between the silking cut stage and maturity and it is therefore advisable to ‘plant an early and later maturing variety. Canada, No. 240 has proved useful us an early matur- ing variety for Prince Edward 1s- land conditions, while Algonquin, a later and more productive hy- brid, is most satisfactory for feeding the latter part of the sea- son, says W.N. Black, Supervisor of Illustration Stations, Dominion Experimental Station, Charlotte- town, P.E.I. Corn for fodder should be planted in close proximity to the stable or in a field immediately adjoining the pasture area where it may be readily accessible to livestock. For fall feeding, éorn may be planted with an ordinary drill seeder in rows ranging from 2a to 36 inches apart or in hills 2 or 3 feet s/part in the row, depending on the yield and quality of for- age desired. When grown gs q soiling crop a thicker seeding is preferable in order that finer advances were made. Toronto paid a top of $23 for best veers and moat sales were considered ti higher at this centre. Montreal had a. good demand at $22 to $23 or. good veais; Winnipeg up to $20; Calgary also up to $20; Ed- monton $18 to $19 and $20; Prince $19; Moose Jaw $17; Saskatoon $20; Regina s19; and Moncton $15, the latter f.c.b. Toronto advanc- ed 50c. selling Grade A at $33, while Montreal was offering 50c below the opening price, Grade A being quoted at $33 at the close. In the West, prices were undisturbed, Winnipeg paying $30.50 for Grade A.’ Calgary. $30.75 to $30.85, was somewhat higher, while Edmonton also firmed up to $31 for Grade A for shipment. Saskatchewan markets were unchanged at $3025, while Vancouver paid $80.50 to $30.75. and Mcncton $32.25. Aug. 20- Hsrvesting which had commenced in early sown crop in the three Prairie Provinces. has been held up this peat week by widespread rains. The added precipitation will smist in good filling of the crop, which is already apparent, but will delay maturity of later sown crops. Another two to three weeks without frost will be required if they are to be successfully har- vested. Hail damage is reported from several points, the heaviest occurring at Dolor-sins in South- ern Manitoba which ranged from 10 to 80 percent . In this section. some flax fields were so damaged that they had to be ploughed un- der. accordingto the weekly crop report of the Department of Ag- riculture of the Canadian Nation- al Railways. stalks producing a ruse mount of green forage may result. When seeded too thinly, corn often de- vslops coarse stalks which are not readily eaten. Corn is a strong feeder and re- quires good land for best results. Care should be exercised to wold severe burning by frost in the late fail as frost inyury will re- duce the palatability and feeding value of the crop. This loss may be avoided by shocking in large stc'oka when frost is imminent. FOR SALE Ford Station Wagon (I940) with factory reconditioned an- gine (I947).
