A petition from the merchants doing business on and about Queen Sqaare ask~ ing that the market toils be abolished is to be presented at the regular meeting of the City Council to be held on Monday evening next, and lastnight an informal meeting of the Board was beld to hear wiiat the promoters of the petition kad to say regarding the matter, Jouncillors Crabbe, Hooper, Lyons, Wheatley snc McCarren were present. Counce Il» Crabbe explained the otject of the mee «- ing, avd :nvited discussivn. Mr Fred Perkins was the principal spokeeman. He explained that the mer chants were desirous of promoting trade aud¢uing everything in ‘their power to bring people from the country into the city. Among the matters that | up’for consideration at their meetings was | the abolition of the market tolls, and it bad | been decided to ask the Counce] to take The tol!-collector’s term was about to expire and tLey thought | action along this line. this was the proper time to take action, | The country people complain of these tolls, and there 1s considerable friction beiween | town and country because of them. I[n- | deed, p:ople who can dispose of their pri eellthem. There ereno tolls imoosed in Summerside, whise sheds and other accom- modation are provided, and to go some conse quence. people prefer there in thought it was tire daty of every patriotic Chariottetonian to do all in his power to bring trade inte the place and do away with anything that might have a tendeacy iG keep the people from coming in. He thought the small amount the city cor- yoration receives from these tolle, some $500 or $600, might be made np some Otber way. The merchants who ask for the change are all large tax-payers, and lde thought the experiment might be tried fora time, ant if itis not found to work tatisfacturily they cau return to the old order of things. The other merchant present concurred in the statements made by Mr }’erkins. Mr. Belis;one of the butchers having a stall in the lower part of the market buaild- ing, did net fallin line with the argu- ments advenced by Mr. Perkins. He did not believe that the paltry eum collected coming intotown, Hetsought they get clear very easily as it is. Mr. Perkins, in reply, said it wasa fact that some people would not come inte town because of the tolls ; they preferred to go to Summerside where tolls were aot im- posed. He instanced one case to bear out hie assertion. He believed, further, that there are very few towns where tolls are cullected as they are in Charlottetown. Counciller Crabbe saidthat a different system was adopted in other towns ; that the country people generally transacted their business with middle~men and these had to pay. He believed that Mr. Holman did the bulk of this class of trade in Summerside, At the present time the city receives $672 a year from Mr. McLaren, who ccllects theee tolls, and the corporation has to pav for keeping the equare clean. ‘ Under all the circum-~ stances he could not see hie way clear to do away with the collection of tolls from people séiling fish, meat, etc., on the equare, but he was favorable to abol- iehiog the tolls imposed upon those who market building. Counciller ‘Crabbe’ in this He thought it was the women upstairs who complained about the tolla, and did not think the men selling outside objected. He was favorable to removing the upstairs tolls for a time to see how it would work. Councillor Hooper said he bad not fally considered the matter, and therefore de- clined tof state what action he would take. But if he went for taking the tolls off ap- stairs he would go tor taking them off outside as well. Counciilor McCarron declined to ex- press an opinion until ne hed neard botn sides of the question fully presem-ed This closed the proceedings, and the deputation withdrew after Mr. Perkins had thanked the Council for the attention given them. ~~ Wy, 3% ™ Ny oo WearUnderwear If ioeme’t fit it ien’t fit. ¢ i é ’ “ sae FP mer Fitato must fit.
