PREVENT HORSES FEEDING RAPIDLY; 10 TOO Horses that eat their grain very rapidly get far less good of it than a slower feeder that takes tme tomasticate more thoroughly. Among the many plans ad- vocated a# a preventive to this both harm- ful and wasteful! habit, one of the best is to add a f-w handfuls of dry shorts to the grain ration. This applies more particu- larly to road horses, which crushed grain is apt to render when being driven. Some feeders resort to the plan of keeping the bottom of the manger cov- ered wiih stones two or three inches in liameter, among which the oats are thrown. This plan has the desired effect, but it must be hard on the animals’ teeth. For farm horses there is no better way than to feed crushed or whole grain mixed with chopped hay. Mastication will then of necessity be accomplished, which will prevent colic and fit the grain for beipg thoroughly digesied and assimil- ated. ‘ } . 100 jOU0re FATAL COLLAPSE OF A RESTURANT. Keefe, owner of the premises, was recently informed that the foundation was defective and on the advice of the archi- tect the ground had been eniirely dug away from beneath the building in order that new underpinning might be set in Owing to the mismanagement of the con tractors, the structure was left insnfficienly svpported and a collapse resulted.
