SCRIPTURE IAN D PROHI BITION.
Is there a scriptural warrant for
the enactment of a prohibitory liquor
law? Yes. You will find it in the
story of the Rechabites as told in the
3-5th chapter of Jeremiah. In the
earlier times, before the days of
parliaments. the head of the family
was not only the ruler of his des-_
cendants, but their lawgiver as well.
He exercised by what was thought to
be a. divine right the prerogative of
law-making. Our constitution gives
to the federal parliament power to
make laws for the peace and good
government of Canada. The head of
the house of the Rechabites, one
hundred and tifty years before the
days of Jeremiah, had exercised his
recognized right to makelaws for the
peace and good government of his
descendants. And the central feature
of his code was this : “Ye shall
drink no wine, neither ye nor your
sons forever.”
It was aprohibitory liquor law,
not for a year, or for three years like
our Scott Act, to be then again voted
upon, but a law like that of the
