Cassius M. Clay once told me that he could never get along on less than nine hours’ sleep, and that he did not be- lieve that a man should be waked in the morning. He believes that a good men- tal con lition can only be kept by daily exercise in open air and by cold batlis. It was the same witha number of old men whom 1 interviewed. The follow- ing is ous of thein, which will interest | Canadian orators: Sir Andrew Clark sat waich in hand when Mr, Giadstone’s great Newcastle speech was delivered, | He had limited his patient to an hour, As the hour wasup Mr. Gladstone toss- ed aside the last sheet of his notes, and | the physician looked triumphant. But | in the warmth of his oratory Mr, Glad- | stone went on without notes for nearly | half an hour longer, during which time the physician's look of triumph changed | to one of mingled perplexity and | amusement, After tlie speech | the applause of the crowded New: | castle theatre was tumultuous, and was crowned with a touching rendering of | “Auld Lang Syne” by thousands of | voices iu unwoan. Mr. Gladstone was on | his way out of the hall, but he turned back to acknowledge this moving fare- well. There were many swelling hearts | at that moment, for the scane was ( V:re powering to the emotions, and thse | who were near Mr. Gladstone were tvt | surprised to note that he was moved to tears. They looked at Sir Andrew Clark. ‘“‘Never mind,” said Sir Andrew, “it will do him geod.” He had feit Mr. Glads oue’s pulse, and was able to say | that the veteran statesman was in even | better form at theend of his speech than | he had been at tlie beginning. A Giri of the Period, Sneak thieves and burgiars who be- lieve that the old-fashioned girl of the three-volume novel, wlio faints in the face of danger, is a creature of flesh and blood, should be undeceived at once. If sue ever existed, the species is fortu- nately extinct, for the girisjof to-day are made of entirely different stuff. This wag proven conclusively in West Phila- deiphia recently, when Miss Alice | Sypber, a daughter of Lawyer Josiah R. Sypher, put a burglar to flight and near- ly ended his earthly career. Tie thief eutered Miss Sypher’s room, and, instead of scaring her half to death, found him- se if looking down the muzzle of a revol- ver. The fellow had nerve, however, and carelessly remarking, “That isn’t loaded,” started to walk toward her. But it was loaded, asthe thief discovered when a bullet whizzed within an inch of hits head and imbedded itself in the door panel, With an oath, the baffled burg- lar flew down the stairs and escaped through the door.—Puiladelphia Record. A Felive Somuambulist, A somnambulistic Angora cat is the strange possession of a Germantown family. The cat, which isa very valu- able animal, developed a tendency a few months ago to walk abroad at night, a dissipation that had previously been entirely foreign to the nature of that most aristocratic feline. It wouid go out in the back yard and fraternize with disreputable Toms and Marias that held nightiy serenades there, Every ef- fort of the family to keep the cat at home failed. One night recently the nan of the honse watched the cat as it lay asleep on its dainty cushion in the parlor, Suddenly the cat arose and started for the door. The man caught the animal and shook it roughly. The cat scratched about and screamed as a human somnambulist would do, and afterward lay trembling violently. Several times since the cat has been caught in the same way, and esac: time anowed conclusively tiiut it was a sleop- wuiker,—Priladelpiia Inguirer, Testing His Honesty.
