November 4, 1997 Closer to the heart The fourty eight hour famine By Kelly Mason One UPEI student had the initiative to cut through the “Red Tape’ and to go on a 48 hour independent famine to benefit a local charity. D. Scott Campbell did alot of giving this weekend. He went on a forty eight hour famine and raised a total of $ 1791.17. Campbell's efforts were in hopes of raising money and awareness for The Upper Room, a Charlottetown soup kitchen. “It’s a place that pre- pares meals for people who can’t afford them are who are mentally/physically handi- capped, or mentally/physically challenged," Campbell ex- plained. "It operates three days a week (Mondays, Wednes- days and Fridays) with two sets of meals. People can walk in, get a free meal with- out having to answer any ques- tions.“ Cambell added that he wasn’t alone on this project either. He had help from stu- dents, The Biology Club, Biol- ogy Professors, his family, and countless others. He would like to give these people his sincere thanks and appreci- ation forall their on this worthy project. Even when the project seemed bleak, Campbell did not turn his back on his duty. “I told several people I was going to be there. Sol had to be there and do what I’d promise to do. “ The 48 hour project ran from Friday, October 24th through Sunday, the 26th. “ This is fantastic. I thought this was going to be a dud," were Cambell's thoughts on the first day out. He was worried that people wouldn’t catch on but they did. On Saturday the inevita- ble sank in. “ My God I’m hungry. “ Cambell admitted that, among the several who stopped and gave their sup- port, there were two individu- als who gave him donations, and who stick out in his mind. An elderly lady was one of them. “ She was walking down the street. She shuffled by me. She turned around and walked back towards me with her hands in her pocket. She came up to me, pointed to the sky and said ‘look at the pretty bird.' Like an idiot 1 looked up and looked. I couldn’t see the pretty bird and looked downto tell her. She had already gone halfway down the street. In the jar was a twenty dollar bill that she had just donated. That was a truly selfless act, she didn’teven want recognition." The other distinctive presence was Bruce Maclsaac. He is currently running for Mayor. Hestopped by and talked to Scott for an hour and a half. The conclusion of the weekend brought Campbell's basest sentiments, despite his noble work: “I was tired. | hadn’t eaten for the last few days so my wind was wander- ing. | was driving to a restau- rant with my mom and sister when thought, my God, heat!“ The Cadre hs F.Y|L.
