He is slow and dull and uninteresting and all that sort of thing—a regular old buffer, J Poor girl! She says her life suppose, would be miserable without me. How can I leave her?” “Then where will this end? Oh, my boy, where are you drifting to?” “The divorce court, 1 suppose,” said Harry recklessly. ‘Some day I imagine we shall makea bolt of it—and then”—— “And then you will realize what it is to ruin three lives. If you love this woman, you will give her up.” “I do love her, but I won't give her up!” burst out Harry. “It's no use preaching, old man; I'm not good enough; I can’t rise to the prac- tice.” Jolin Brown was silent a few moments, thinking. He pitied the young man. What could he do tosave him? A sudden thought struck him—Harry had never had ahappy home. During his wander- xistence he could have seen but lit- t ] life. What could he ing € tle of domestic know of the sacredness of the tie be- tween husband and wife—the tie that he was doing his best to break? Who could tell but that a glimpse into a happy home might arouse some of the latent good in him. “Look here, Harry,” said Brown ab- ruptly, “I'm not going to preach—I see it's no use. Come home to dinner with me instead and see my wife. The very sight of a good woman and a happy wife is good for a man in your frame of mind. Come and talk to Alice. She is the best medicine I can recommend you.” Harry started. “I didn't know you were married, Brown; 'pon my word I didn’t. Happy man!” John smiled—a smile of trust and hap- piness that lit up his rugged face into positive beauty. “I am a happy man—thanks to Alice. When I think of my own good fortune in having sucha wife, it makes me very piti- ful to you poor bachelors.” He took out his watch—a large gold timepiece as absolutely reliable as him- self. “Half past 6—we dine at 7. Come, Hastings. It doesn't take more than 20 minutes to get to Curzon street. Aristo- cratic neighborhood, isn’t it? I dare say you have often driven past our house— Bijou house, and a gem of a place it is! lf there are two things I am proud of, ALICE LOOKED UP AT HIM QUICKLY. they are my wife and my house. You are not going to do any more writing, Harry? We shall only juct be in time for dinner.” Harry Hastings was standing at his desk busily arranging papers, and it was quite a perceptible time before he an- swered without turning his head. “Very sorry, but I really can’t come tonight. I—I've an engagement. Some other time I shall be delighted to make —your wife’s—acquaintance.” Brown was quite distraught that even- ing. His thoughts wandered to his old pupil with tiresome persistency. He hardly noticed that Alice wore a new and bewitching tea gown. He did not see that though her eyes were fixed on her book she never turned a page. Alice, too, was distraught, but pres- ently she yawned and looked up at her husband with a slightly unamiable ex- pression on her calm, fair face. “What on earth are you thinking of, John? Do you know that you are a very dull companion this evening?” John started out of his reverie. “Am I, dearest? I know I'm a dullold fellow. I was thinking of my old pupil, Harry Hastings. I've often talked to you about him, you know, andif you re memoer I met him fast week in the city” “Yes, I remember,” said Alice indiffer- ently, picking up the book which had slipped from her hand. “Well, why ‘poor’ Harry Hastings? I thought he was @ very rich young man.” “He is a very unhappy man just now. He's got into an unfortunate entangle- ment with a married woman”—— “Really, did he tell you so?” “Yes, he told me. It appears he met her years ago in India.” “And who is the woman?” “He refused to tell me, and he was ROBB ENGINEERING CO. Ltd, Amiberst right. Whoever she may be, I pity her and him.” He wok his wile’s pretty hand in hia DAILY EXAMINER and looked at her fondly. “Ah, Alice, if there were more women like you the world would be a very dif- ferent place,” She drew her hand quickly away—a sudden flush of color on her pale cheeks. “Don't be foolish, John. You rnn my rings intome. We are not on our honey- moon.” Brown felt a trifle chilled. (To be Continued) Perfection of Cynictsin, Oscar Wilde was introduced at a re cent garden-party in London to Mrs. Osgood, of Knebworth House. In the course of a few minutes’ talk it was divulged that the lady was on the eve of departing for America, “Going to America?” said Oscar; ‘‘deah me: what for, now?” ‘“‘To see my husbanu,” was the reply. Oscar stared sleepily at her in astonishment. Dropping languidly into a chair he said: ‘‘Going all the way to America to see your own” (with ac- cent on the own) ‘‘husband? Deah me! The process consists in using two washes or solutions for covering the surface of the walls—one composed of castile soap and water, and one of alum and water. The proportions are three- juarters of a pound of soap to one gal ion of water, and half a pound of alum to four gallons of water, both substan- ‘es to be perfectly clean and dry, and the temperature of the air not above 25 degrees Fahrenheit when the composi- tions are applied. ‘The first, or soap wash, should be laid on when boiling hot with a flat brush, taking care to form a froth on the brick- work. This wash should remain twenty- four hours, so as to become dry and uard before the second or alum wash is ipplied, which should be done in the saine manner as the first. The temper ture of this wash when applied thay be 69 or 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and this slso should remain roe hours before a second coat of soap wash is put ou. These coats are to be applied al ternately until the walls are made im pervious to water. The alum and soap tuus combined form an insoluble com- pound, filling the pores of the masonry ind entirely preventing the water frow entering the wall.— Architect and Builder. Ac, P, R. Aug 7—wky Saved by a Drink, A child of six years had developed a bad habit of rising in the night to drink from the water bottle, and had been for- bidden in vain. On the night of a recent storm his parents being away, his aunt tucked him safely in bed. ‘‘Now, Dickey,’’ she said, ‘“‘remember I can tell if you go to the water bottle.”’ “Oh no, auntie,’’ he smiled slyly, ‘‘how can you?” “I can tell,’’ she said with conviction. “But how?’’ said Dick, skeptically. “I can,’’ she repeated; ‘‘and since you won't promise, you naughty boy, I shall empty the bottle.’’ And she did, to the young reprobate’s consternation. In the middle of the night the gable of the house was blown down, and crashed like thunder through the ceiling of master Dick’s room. As his aunt and the servant rushed in a terrible sight met their gaze. The bed was almost hidden by masses of masonry, two iron feet at the head being driven complotely through the floor. With a shriek his aunt feil on her knees. ‘‘O, Dickey! poor Dickey!’’ she cried. ‘‘He’s been killed.’’ the words had hardly left her lips when there came a light, faltering step from the bath room and as they turned there stood Dickey, his teeth chattering with cold, a candle in one hand a ful) water bottle in the other. For a full mo- ment he surveyed the bed with its ton or two of debris, and then shook his head with sorrowful admission. ‘*Yeth aunty,’’ he declared; “‘you said vou could tell if 1 did.’’—Boston Globe.
