(tht tlle emma S (\TURDAY, cee te a tC —— eet te tL AT NY f [NER.} ——| a | THE DAILY EXAM OCTOBER 31, t8vl. The P. E. Island Cases. Txe Supreme Court has reserved its judgment on the P. E. Island cases. By the way, isn’t it pitiful to see Mr. L. H. Davies and his three followers depending for their seats in Parliament upon the strength «f a few technival objections { The strongest of these objections is that the petitions were (necessarily) served in Ottawa. Ifthis objection be sustained, a boodier, Grit or Tory, may in future buy his way into Parliament ; then slope off to Ottawa ; and there snap his fingers at those who ask that the provisions of the law be enforced against him. The man who raised this ubjection is certainly a * stand- ard elevator ” ! The Premier and Mr Chepleau. Some of the Oppositionists are surprised to learn that Mr. Abbott proposes to be leader of the Government de facto, ani all are confident that his refusal of the de- mand that Hon. Mr. Chapleau shall be Minister of Railways is fraught with disas- ter to his Administration. But the major. ity by whom Mr, Abbott is supported, will, we venture to predict, commend him for the stand he has taken. Mr. Chapleau is, without doubt, an excellent orator and au influential politician. But the Premier would be false to the trust he holds from the country at large, if he were tu submit to the dictation of Mr. Chapleau—even for an instant, Ifit be true that Mr. Chap- leau has made bis stay in the Government contingent upon his reception of the con- trol of one of the ‘‘Government Spending Departments,’ tion as} statesman and distinctly lowered himself inthe eyes of the country. A Minister of the Crown cught to be above], such petty ambitious, and to be con- cerned most of all about good the of his cointry. The contention of Mr. Chxpleau that heisanxious only for Quebec, may |, sound well enough in Quebec. not be heard with pleasure by the } I peopie of the other Provinces. inces, with Quebec, make up _ the one Canada, whose public ‘ have been confided to the care of Mr. 2 30. Abbott, Mr. Chapleau and their colleegues | f Mr. Chapleau’s posi- tion, asset forth by the press, is from every point of view untenable. Let him unite with the Grits of Quebec in a cry for|| the interests of Quebec, and instantly the electors of the other Provinces will unite against the Grits and him. A representa- tive of Quebee controlled for the past twelve years the Public Works Depart- ment ; and a representative of Quebec (the late Hon. J. H. Pope) controjled for several years the Railway Department. So that on the ground of sectionalism— in the Government. i ported, is that chosen by Mr. Chapleau— some other Province might now with jus- tice lay claim to the control of the great spending departments. The Patriot “*The muddie at Ottawa” and ‘a pretty kettle of fish.”. There iano muddle and no kettle of fish. Ifthe reports be true, Mr. Abbott has merely declined to listen favorably to a request that Mr, Chap- leau shall be Minister of Railways under his Administration; and Mr. Chapleau will either remain in the office of Secretary of State or resign his portfolio. In either case the duty of the Premier and the people is clear. The one will maintain his position as Leader (de facto) of the Government for the whole of Canada; the other will main- tain him in that position. The conduct of Mr. Abbott and Sir John Thompson in the midst of all the difliculties of last session reflected credit upon the Government and strengthened their held upon the confi- dence of every intelligent and honest man in the country, and the result of the Chap- leau incident will have a like effect. ( prates madly about —The Ottawa Free Press on Monday published a libellous fabrication intimating that among Pacaud’s infamous dsburse- ments was @ large sum to purchase a diam. ond necklace fur Madame Angers. The Ottawa Journal publishes Governor Angers’ indignant denial, in which he characterizes the statement as ‘‘an infernal slander.” The Patriot’s telegraphic liar sent the slan- der to cur truthful journal. What the Patrivt will do about it remains to be seen.
