Mr. i i -1 | l r Every Mother A Doctor It is an anxious time for mothers when the little ones get their feet cold and wet, and come home hoarse and coughing, or awaken in the night vic- tims of deadly croup. Then it is that -.mothers turn gratefully to Dr. Chase, :_ who, through his great Recipe Book and 'gfnmous family remedies, has time and éagain saved the little ones and older iones, too. from suftering and death. It is truly surprising how promptly §Dr. Cha.se’s Syrup of Linseed and Tur- ipentine brings relief when the throat sore and irritated, when the cold is gtight in the chest, and the cough pain- and distressing. It allays the in- giiammation, heals the sore and torn gmembranes, soothes the nerves and gclears the air passages. People who know of the singular vir- gtues of Dr. Chase`s Syrup of Linseed iand Turpentine do not think of accept- ing the cheap substitutes which many druggists otrei- in its place ; 25. cents. Aiient. 21 dw St john N B Miller stands in the front rank of the ad- vanced ciass of provincial dairy farmers, and a visit to his well-appointed home- stead could not fail to he a source of plea- sure and profit to a man who takes an in- telligent interest in that branch of the great agrtcultural industry which is being so successfully prosecuted by Mr. Miller and his son. The Miller Farm comprises one hundred and five acres, every foot of which is under thorough and profitable cultivation. It has a southern aspect with wide frontage on St. Peter’s Road. The farm is divided into four tlelds, each con- taining from twenty to thirty acres, and by pursuing a systematic rotation of crop- ping each field receives a heavy coating of manure every fourth year. The whole acreage of the farm is thus maintained in a high state of cultivation continuously, each succeeding year adding to the store of rich fertillzing matter held in reserve by the soil. When the land has been pre- pared for this year’s root crop Mr. Miller will have covered thirty acres with manure, and the richness of the grass crop on his hay and pasture fields is evi- dence that the. land has been most liberally supplied with plant food. M r. Miller is one of the few far- mers in thisProvince, who pins his faith to fodder corn and the silo for winter fee d- ing, he growing about twenty acres of corn each year. He has experimented with several varieties, but he has yet to find that kind which can be depended upon to yield a full crop year after year because of our comparatively short summer season. But while in some favorable seasons Mr. Miller secures a heavy crop of corn, and in others a lighter yield, he claims that, takinglone year with another he can with corn take a larger amount of valuable feed froma given acreage than he could by raising noots exclusively, which latter he also grows to a more limited extent. Some idea of the great fertility of the Miller Farm can be obtained from a considera- tion of the fact that, with the exception of summer pasturage for his young cattle, Mr. Miller grows feed sufllcient to main- tain in best condition over fifty head of horned cattle and from ten to twelve horses. Mr. Miller’s principal business for many years being that of milk vendor, his main object in following dairy farming is the production of pure milk for family use. and the fact that he has' supplied many of the best and most particular families in the City for years with milk exclusively from hisown herd. may be taken as evi- dence that theproduct of his dairy has given entire satisfaction. While ready to give due credit to the excellence of Jersey and Guernsey blood in a herd, Mr. Miller regards the hardy Ayrshire as the dairy breed par excellence, and with faith in the adaptability of the Ayrshire to the conditions which obtain in this Province started out to found an Ayrshire herd some ten years ago. Cornmencing with a well~bred heifer of this breed, selected by Mr. F. G. Bovyer from the valuable herd of Mr. James McCormack, Rockton, Ont., there are now on the Miller Farm twenty direct descendants of this grand cow, all pure bred and either registered or eligible for registration in the Domi- nion Ayrshire Herd Book. Mr herd prior to its dispersion was one of the best in Canada. Pure Gold was a prize winner at the Chicago World’s Fair. He is an animal of great substance, and the sire of excellent milking stock. This bull is now owned by Mr. Robert Furness of Vernon River Bridge, and before leaving Marshfield he left the impress of his 'rich breeding on the Miller herd. Mr. Millers Ayrshire herd has now at its head two magnificent bulls, grand animals whether regarded from the standpoint of individu- ality or of breeding. They are each four years old, and both were brought §rom Ontario when calves. Jock Marsh eld, 2434, was bred by Jas. McCormack & Sons, Rockton, Ontario, and sired by Jock Morton, 1386, dam Bonnie Jean, 1766. This bull is of the modern standard Ayrshire color-white with red spots. He is a very quiet, tractable animal, and of great depth of body. His oldest pro- jeuy are hcifers of great' promise. Bald ack Lad was si.-ed by Monarch gud, 1939: are cheapest though they cost more than the ill-fitting kind, because a dam Ruby Crofts, 2474, and bred by Mr two lu‘_ls were selected when calves by Mr. F.G. Bovyer, because of the excellence of their breeding, and of the great indivi- duality of their sires and dams. The expect ationsof the purchaser have been fully real are concerned, an l they give abundant breeding purposes in every important section of this great dairy Province.
