To appreciate the magnitude of the pork packing industry in the Great West of tbe United States it isonly needful to study the figures furnished by the Cin- cinnati Price-Curre in its annual re- porc on the matter. Whea one reads that during the vear ending 1st March, 22,-/ 200,000 hogs been packed in the Wnited Statestue wind failsto grapple’ |with the quantity. The vear had oue predeceseor, that of 1898-99, in which a‘ greater number of hogs than this were \ handled, but in no previous year was there a greater outlay forthe buying of hogsin that country. The costof hogs purchased | by western packers last year aggregated | $212,850,0C0. In 1899 lower prices pre- | vailed, the average paid being $3.71 as} against $4.11 ;aud though more hogs were handled in the lat'er year the outlay | amounted to only $203,686,000. To show ' the growth of the iudustry it might be well | | to mention thatten years ago the outlay | | for hogs iu the west was $134,169,000 and | MITATION {8 THE SINCEREST | in the east $47,000,000. The amount! paid in the east this year is estimated at | \ VE; Millan, lawofMre Wm Me- Machon, lef Vein-sdayv last for in the North West Charlottetown to Mounted Police force. Their departure is regre-ted by a large circle of 2friends and relat ves, but especially will they be miss~ ed in the Y M Literary Sosiety, of whic 1 they were promineot members. At & re- cent meeting of the society a resolution cf regret at their departure etc., was tendered ; them We feel sure, however, that they will prove good men aod distinguish them< selves in their new field of labor, as did ihe other P E Islanders in the battles in South Africa where, so far, two of the number, sad to eay have shed their blocd, One of our schoo! teachers, Miss Flora | McPhee,is veritably au exemplifier ofgreat patience and perseverance, having,a few days, ago completed a crazy pattern patch quilt which,,we learn, consists of (1050) ten hundred and fifty patches, all of which are (different patterns, It is presumably e remarkable quilt a veritable masterpiece, It has now become a popular topic ef couversation, and we understaud that Miss McPhee receives a great many callers these days who come to admire this quaint and notable arcicle. Rev W C Matthews, Methodist pastor, preached au impressive sermon in the $55,000,000, and in the west $212,860,~) Methodist Church, Sabbath eveving, his 000. Of the pork packiag cities Chicago of | course leads the list, its total being 711,- | 009,000 pour ds forthe year. Kangus City | comes next with nearly three milllions to her credit, while among the other places St. Joseph, also io Missouri, is perhaps making the most rapid strides towards the front. Last year its pack amounted to 1,346,733 pounds; in 1892 it was orly 265,000 pounds. Fifteen ci:ies, among them Omaha, St. Louis, Indian- apolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, .alusost con- trol the packing, doing 20 602,517 pounds out of a total of 22,200,821 pounds. The production of green meats, fresh from the block, in the east and west for the year ending March lst, are respectively, 595,000,000 pounds and 2,868,.000,000 pounds, indicating a decrease of 193,000,- 000 pounds compared with the proceeding year. What the entire industry amounts to is hard to comprehend, but these figures help one to realize its present proportiona and wonder at its possibilities. _—_—_—_—_0 > - e— --——— .— SCHOOL EXAMINATION. The semi-annual examination of the Brookvale School was held ov Friday 27th ult., in the presence of the trastees and rate-payers of the district. The ex-~ amination was made by the Rev. D. B. Reid, “Kelly’s Cross, assisted by Neil Murphy, Maurice MeDonafd and the teacher, A. C. Deighan. The examination occupied almost four hours and the pupils were thcroughbly tested in ali the branches they had studied. In Curre’s Klemers tary aod {Curries Advanced Grammar the different classea were examined from cover to cover, and their ready and correct answers showed that they bad been skilfully drilled. Iaarithmetic the fifth and sixth classes were examined from Smith and McMurchy’s text-book and ceuld notbe puzzled by any prob'em io it, and it ispleasing to note that two of these pupils are only 12 years of age. Ia fact, it is only justice to ssy, that there was not oue weak class in the school for all the pupils seemed to be equally well gro .nded is the’subjects taught. At the close the Rev D B Reid, complimented both teacher and pupile and expressed himselfas highly satesfied with the resalt of the examination. Witness remarks that at this rate Germany will double her populatioa in about eixty~five years, and will be able to afford a large volume of emigration for the peopling ef her colonies and other people’s colonies, something Fraice can- notdo unless a wonderfui change takes place in her social conditions. If Great Britaia be taken for a comparison, it will be found that her population at its preaeny rate ot increase will double in about eighty veare, but if the comparison be extended to include the colonies, the British in. crease is far greater than that of Ger- many. The importance oft he prospect thus presented cannot be over-estimated, asthe rate of increase is necessarily a considerable factor in the matter of dominance. On this point it should be noted that the population of Russia, at its present rate of increase, will double in forty-five yeare. fr. A.W. CHASE Triumphs over the Worst Forms of KIDNEY...
