DRE A MS. Dreams can be procured by whispering iii the ears when a person is asleep. One of the most curious as we I as authentic examples oflliis kind has been referred to by several writers- I find the particulars in a paper by Dr. Gregory, and they were related to him by a gentleman who wttii _ The subject of it was an oflicer in the expedi- tion to Louisburg, 1685, who had this peculiarity in so remarkable a degree, that his companions in the transport were in the shit of amusing themselves at his expense. 'l'hey would produce in him an kind of a dream by whispering into his ear, especially if this was dono by a friend with w one voice he was miliiir. At one time they conducted him through the whole progress of a quarrel, which ended in a duel ; and when the parties were supposed to be inst ; a pistol was put into his hand, which he fired, and awakened at the report. (in another occasion they found him asleep on the to of a locker, or bunker, in the cabin, when they made him believe he had fallen overboard, and exhor- led him to save himself by swimming. They told him that a shark was pursuing him, and en- trested him to dive for his life. He instantly did so, with such force as to throw himself entirely from the locker upon the cabin floor, by which he was much bruised, and awakened of course- After-fie landing of the army at Louisburg, his friends found him asleep in ‘s tent, much an- noyed by the csnnonsding. They then made him hlieve that he was engaged, when he ex- pressed great fear, and showed. no evident dispo- sition to run away. Against this they remun- strriied, but at the same" time increased his fears, by imitating the groans of the wounded and dying ; and when he asked, as he often did, who were down, they named his particular friends. At last they told him that the man next him- si-ll’ in the lips bail fullon, when instantly be sprung from his bed, rushed out of his tent, and was aroused from his danger and his dream to- gether by falling over the tent ropes. A remark- able circumstance in this case was, tliat\ifter these experiments. he had no distinct recollections or fatigue ; and used to tell his friend that he was sure he was.plsying. some trick upon him. A case entirely similar in its bearing is related in Smellic’s Natural I'Iistory,’ths sub’ t of which was a medical student III the niversity of Edinburgh. _ A singular fact has been observed in dreams which are excited by noise, thst’thc same sound awakens the person and produces the dream which a pears to _liiiii to occupy a considerable ' be following example of this has been repeated to me:—A ‘gentleman dreamed that lie lisd enlisted as a soldier, J0lI'l8tl his regiment, dc- serted, was apprehended, carried back, tried, con- demned to be shot, and at last carried out for execution. After the usual preparations, a gun was tired; he awolto with the report, and found that a noise in the IQIJOIIIIIIQ room had roduced both the dream and awsksusd him. 1‘ a same want of notion of time is observed in dreams from other caucus. ' . Dr. Gregory mentions a gentleman who, after sleeping in a damp place, was a long time liable to a feeling of suffocation whenever he slept in a lying posture, and this was always accompanied by a dream of a skeleton which grasped him vio- lently by the throat. He could sleep in a sitting posture without any uneasy feeling; and nller trying various experiments, he at last had a son- tinel placed beside him, with orders to wake him whenovqr he sunk down. On one occasion he was attacked b the skeleton, and a lon struggle ensued before it awoke. On finding suit with his attendant for allowing him to lie so long in such a state of stilsring, he was assured that he had not lain an instant, but had been awakened the moment he began to sink. The gentleman, after a considerable time, rscovercd from the ufuetioti. It is a part of every msn’s duty to give the wsiglitcf bis influence to the correction of every evil wbicli iufests society. This, too, we owe to society, for the protection which it gives us. It is a debt. Not to pay it is disboucsty.—Rei-.
