Rumor had it that after a heavy shower of rain beautiful pearls. ranging in size from that of a pea- nut to mustard seed. were discover- ed thickly strewn over part of the field. Thousands of people flocked to thc scene in motor-cars on bicycles and on foot and the policc authorit- ies sent a force to investigate. It is not known who was responsible for the hoax. The pearls turned out ot be thc eggs of some species of insect or reptile, very much resembling pearls in appearance but bursting on the slightest pressure. People who rushed to the spot to enrich themselves brought away handfuls of the eggs, and many are still retaining them: refusing to be lieve that they are not pearls. .___--¢o->i You are. upt lo gel a stinging rc- prnof if you interfere with the busy little bee. .
