Murphy last evening with a round of hearty applause when, as Larry Donovan in Shaun Rhue, he entered the door of the Donovan cottage. Thereare plays that are eagerly patron- ized trom season to season, whose popoularity appeare to be never-ending, and the Shaun Rhue is one of these. The play tells the old, old story of poverty and virtue triumphant over wealth and villainy; but it is so permeat- ed with a rollicking Irish’ wit taat breaks forth spontaneously that the audience never doubts but that eventually the clouds will be cleared away. In the second act, when the heart-broken Larry lingers beside the grave of his mother before leaving the country, Mr Murphy sings his celebrated song *‘A Hand- ful of Earth,” with touching effect. Mr. Murphy is supported by an excellent com- pany.—Ex. At the Lyceum to-night. cenoenlignaen Tue Man Woman Abmines.—An Eng- lish magazine lately offered a prize to the best answer to the question ‘*What kind of man does a woman most admire?’ The answers vary widely. The one which took the prize has among the requisites cf the ideal the following: ‘“‘The man muat interest by uncommonness, either in ap pearance or manner; or he must have the indescribable quality called charm. He must know his own mind and steadily work thereto, even to masterfuilness. He disregards ‘they say,’ and is not one of a herd, His friends sre men— not women. He is only once deceived by the same persrn. His perhaps hasty temper never runs (o unkindness. He has not the abiding peace of common- laceness. He needs sympathy and solace n a sometimes divine discontent. He abides under no failure, but goes on. His occasional want of success only attaches and rivets his determination.” cies For the Little Ones ! We have decided to make a complete clearance of our stock of Children’s Jackets and Ulsters.
