ee Dane eo * : 4 ; P.E. ISLAND IN ISI Diary of Monsgr. Plessis, Bishop of Quebec, (TRANSLATED FOR THE AURORA, N. 8.) The trees are remarkable veither f ! They are smaller Fruit their height nor size, generally than thore of Canada. | bearing trees are scarce. There is very little maple, and still less of cedar, in | piace of which they use red spruce call. | ed violon. as it resists the wind and rain for the leneth of time. For fuel they use | and birch The | enclosures or fences having no posts are | built ina erooked or Zig-7 course, of gummy poles badly trimmed, and are | greatest eech rag without gates, so that in order to cross | from field to field one must always leap | over them at the risk of tearing bis| clothes or getting smeared with balsam. | This inconvenience, how ever, 18 not pecu- liar to the Island of St. Joho. It is the | general custom iu the settlement of the | Gult. It | gates were proscribed among them ; one | is hardly to be seen within ten miles of | another. | Although the forests of the island are | not dense, and are not traversed by many | roads of suflicient width, which tbe] government has caused to be built, there are, nevertheless, many bears to be found ; they are seen every year, and in | would seem as if the use of far greater numbers than one would naturally expect. Sheep, pigs, aud horned cattle often fall a prey to them. The Island shares with the rest of the Gulf the advantages of the fisheries. There are oysters in abundance in many of the bays, lobsters on the sandy shores, | salmon in the rivers, and codfish withio a short distance from land. ‘These re- sources joined to those derived from the | soil, suffice to render quite comfortable those of the inhabitants who are pro- prietors of their lands, and know low to limit their desires to their meaus. There are no medicants. The Island was first peopled by emi- grants from France and by Acadians. Port Joy, Three Rivers, St. Peter’s Bay, Indian Harbor, I’oint Prim on the south of the Island, and Fortune Bay were the principal, not to say the only settlements before the conquest. The inhabitants setiled here by agreement with the French Government, but without takiog out grants of their lands. When the English, having captured Louisburg for the second time, in 1758 destroyed its fortifications, which they regarded with reason as the only bulwark of the French settlements ia that part of North Am- erica, a wide-spread panic seized all the latter. Allthe people fled for fear of falling into the hands of the English, for they would have much preferred to fall into the claws of eld Nick himself. The people of St. John’s Island were cot the last to flee. The greater number aban- | doned their farms for two or three years ; | some returned only after the peace of 1763; while others, having established themselves elsewhere, forgot their foruner homes and never returned. Those who again took possession of their farms never thought of securing ghe ownership of them, although they, or at least such of them as had taken and obrerved the oath of allegiance, would not encoun- ter avy obstacle on the part of the British Government in the matter. There were, however, some who, according to a wide- spread delusiun, could not believe that they were able in conscience to swear fealty to an heretical prince; and like- wise others who, after having sworn, had foolishly persuaded themselves that such au oath was not binding, and in cousequence had transgressed by again joining the ranks of the French armies. Through these different causes, the island, beiag entirely at the disposal of the conquerors, was granted by the gov- ernment to certain individuals, after having beeu divided in 1765 by orders of a governor named Patterson the first who had been placed there, into 67 lots or townships of 20,000 acres each. As the island was but sl?ghily known; and, particularly, as it was necessary to go to | great expenses in order to reap any benefit from them, these townships were not at first much soughi after. As for the division into townships, it was so skilltully done, that of the 67 lots there were not more than two which had not one of their sides or extremities washed by the sea. Meanwhile the Acadian settlers continued to clear the land at Rustico, Malpec, Fortune Bay, Cascum- pec, ete. The Scotch families, fleeing from a country, where they were oppressed by their landlords through hatred for, or on the plea of their ad- herence to, Catholicity, also settled down here with as much confidence and with out having taken more precaution than the Acadian. Both people remained quiet, so that no one had reason to molest | them. But finally the proprietors or | seigneurs of lots appeared, or sent their agents. i | (TO BE CONTINUED. ) > 2S. a - | Mack's Macyreric Mepicine is a positive | remedy for nervous exhaustion and all weak- | ness of the generative organs in both sexes, Sold in Charlottetown by Apothecaries Hall | Co, See advertisement in another column [july 22 2w wkly | Persoxs desirons of purchasing Cigars, | Cigarettes and Pipes, can now obtain them cheap of the proprietor of the Lorne Res- taurant end Cigar Store, as he is clesing out his iarge and varied stock.
