day night, the Mayor and all the Coun
cillors except Councillor Waugh presen

the bills read, including that of the
Electric Light Company, whose service,
was claimed, was not; fulfilled accordin
to contract; the bill for the building
_ the new east end tank which had notlbeen
il1BP¢¢ted by the Council; and alsothe bill
for the painting of the Market Building,
which was not satisfactory to all the
members of the Board. On motion the
bills as read were ordered to be paid sub-
ject to the approval of the Finance Com-
mittee. The petition of Mr. John H.
Boats asking for a reduction in milk
_license tax was again brought up and
after some discussion a rebate of $4 was
allowed. The question of selling of
intoxicating liquors, Sunday selling,
drunkenness and other law-breaking was
informally discussed,aud it was explained
to the police that the law and order of
the town would be iust what they made
it; they were expected to enforce the
laws and the Council as well as citizens
would support them. The committees to
enquire into the lighting of the town
reported that no definite action was taken,
and after some discussion the Council
adjourned.
The milineiy opening of Messrs Sinclair
i& Stewart on Saturday evening was a
1 most beautiful occasion and was attended
by scores from town and country. The
large show window in front attracted
crowds, and critics bear testimony to the
superiority in quality, elegance in shape
and fashion to anything before displayed
in stylish Summerside. In fact few
cities in Canada are credited with show-
inga more elaborate and artistic array
of fashionable head wear than that on
exhibition in the milliuery room. For
richness in quality, beauty in shape and
fashion the arrangement of hats was
most exquisite. The walls were nicely
draped with Liberty silk, Dresden and
Persian ribbons and numerous other
fashionable trimmings. On a large table
in the centre of the room were many of
the handsomest trimmed hiits ever placed
before a Summerside public, including
ccque feather hats trimmed with featl: er
pmn penis, trimmings of panne velvet,
angora. mechlin, feathered breasts, gull
wings etc., hats in shape to suit the most
fastidious ladies. Another sp‘eudid
feature about the display was
the admirable taste shown in arrange-
ment to make the effect so magnificent.
The ladies in charge wore happy looking
countenanoes Saturday evening evidenc-
inga good day's trade. Many complimen-
tary references were inade by visitors,-
and it might be added here that though
'most people thought the splendidly
trimmed hatswere imported, this was
not so, and be it said ‘to their credit that
the ladies of Messrs Sinclair & Stewaz-t’s
millincry room in this grand show
excelled all previous efforts and have
'won for themselvesa reputation which
will give them trade where the import_ed
article will fail. At least this was the
verdict of reputable critics. '
