Edge Out Halifax St. V Mary's 4 - 2 In Keenly Contested Game At Forum Leo Lamoureux and his P. E. Lslanders jumped into a one-game ad in the Maritime Major Hoc- key League finals here on Satur- day night when they scored with 1 4-2 verdict over Halifax Saint Mary's in the opening game of their best of seven series, played before a capacity crowd at the Forum in an action-packed per- formance that was a crowd pleas- :r from start to finish. The second game of the series will get underway here tonight at B:30, with the scene of action shifting to Halifax on Wednesday and saturihy for the third and fourth contests. Playing it wide open and ag- gressive all the way. both squads ramc up with smart performances. The Islanders grabbed off a '.I-0 lead in the first frame on Johnny Dutchak's tally. broke oven on the scoring with one each in the 5 who on goals by Bill Ford for Halifax and Danny Hor- eck of Islanders to still leave Is- landers holding acne goal edge. The Larnoureux-coached squad closed out the final session pot- ting two goals to Hallfax's one for their verdict. Frank Bathgate and .Walter Pa-wlyshyn fired the count- -ers for Islanders while I-Iughle Campbell's unassisted effort ac- counted for saints marker. The game produced snappy hoc- key all the way with both teams pulling smart passing attacks and using their bodies although the game was kept well under control It all times. Islanders held the larger margin on the territory play but were forced to do a lot or hard back-checking to keep the opposition in check. It was scoreless hockey for the first half of the opening frame before defenceman J o h n n y Dutchak rang up the first counter while Frank Gralbowski was scrvl :1 two minutes for holding. Team ng up with Frank Bathgate and Marcel Clements in a ham- mering attask inside Saints blue- line. Dutchak rifled home a hard. screened shot from about 30 feet out with the two forwards ringing in on assists, the tally coming at 11:15. Saints Got Equalizer Jumping to the attack at the outset of the second frame Hali- fax pressed hard that paid off with the equalizer from the stick of Bill Ford in a close play around Islanders cage that was a soft goal for the visitors. Stopping a hard shot by a Halifax forward. :1 long rebound came off goalie llal Gordon's stick. Attempting to' clear it. an Islanders defenceman let it slide off his stick right in front of Atheggege and Ford just pushed ifiholgni-.. The I-Ialifairgoal crme at 4:011 and just 64 seconds later Danny Horeck sent the Islanders out in front again with a power attack around the net with brother Johnny and Dutchak. Danny pot- ting the goal at point-blank range. Halifax were playing two men shy and Islanders one at the time Ford and Johnny Myketyn both serving minors for interference and Hub Beauclry for boarding. Making no attempt to protect their lead in the closing session. Islanders launched an offensive rirzht from the opening faceoff. with Mac Beaten setting up the nicest scoring effort of the night at the 36 second mark. Taking the puck at his own blueline on a pass from Clements. Beaten stick- handled his way along the right boards, sidestepped two back checks. out in behind the net to centre a slick pass to Bathgnte who denied the twines with a siz- yling slap-shot from about ten feet out that goalie Eddie D'Aoust; novcr had a chance on. Hughic Campbell broucht Hali- fax to within one goal of the Is- lenders again at the 7:46 of the period when he caught the Is- landers flatfooted in front of their cage to latch onto a loose puck during a scramble in front of Gor- don to punch it home. Walter Pawlyshyn fired the in- surance marker for Islanders in the closing seconds of the game into an empty Halifax net. Coach Sweeney Schriner pulled out D'Aoust when the Saints forced a faceoff to the left of the Islanders cage with only 40 seconds left in the game. to shove on six forwards in an attempt to notch up the equalizer. But the attempt back- fired. Getting the draw on the faceoff, Bucko Trainor slipped the puck to Jack Morrow. who relayed it to Dutchnk. Dutchak skated it to the Islanders blueline where he sent it ahead to Pawlyshvn who was flying out to centre. The play traplned the whole Halifax team inside the opposing blueline and Pawiyshyn just took his time in skating the remaining distance to flip it into an empty cage. The goal came at 19:29. and put the game on ice for the Island crew. , The fast open pace all through the contest kept the two custod- ions on their toes, with both hav- ing to handle some hard shots. D'Aoust; handled a total of 23 and Gordon l7. and both looked really hot on many close-in attempts by pressing forwards. Fine Refereeing Job One of the outstanding points of the game was the solid refereeing by Leo Murray and J. Charles Deziel from the Quebec Major Hockey League. Never relaxing on the play. they called their shots fair and square ind clamped the lid down tight on any possible outbreaks between players during heatcd, sessions with prompt. firm action. What is more, the players took their decisions without any argument or displays of dissatif- faction, which was a decided -change from previous contests this season. Playing a solid game back on the Islanders defence and leading a numlber of rushes to pot one goal and assist on two others. Johnny Dutchak got the nod of the press for the Henderson and Cudmore Adam hat award. wh-ile Frank Bathgate came through with a steady performance all night to collect a goal and an as- sist and the Jack Cudmore award of a guaranteed Fcrsythe shirt. CHARLOTTETOWN MARCH 19, .1951 Isla-.-fliers win opener in Isianders snappy brand of hoc- key here on Saturday night salted away the initial game of the best of seven series with Halifax Saint Mary's for the Maritime Major Hockey League championship and the right to advance into the Mar- itime Major hockey playdowns against the Cape Breton finalists. There was no doubting Islanders superiority in that opening eon- test either, although the play was close and keen all the way and produced classy hockey action for a capacity crowd. O C Carrying the attack throughout most of the three sessions, the Is- land pucksters definitely held the edge in every department and their close bacl: checking was the final feature that disorganized Saints attacks rind brought them out on the short end of the scor- ing. But it was a nice game to watch. and but for Islanders high flying tactics that broke up some very neat Halifax passing attacks. might have been a different story. They were definately on the bit. however. and except for a couple of slack plays on the part of their defence corps, might have easily given Hal Gordon his fifth shut- out 'in playoff competition. 0 I O A feature of the game that is worthy of mention. was the referr- ing. Bringing down two officials from the Quebec Major League. Leo Murray and Charles Dezlel, has added a definite note for the better as far as the playoffs are concerned. The two officials kept the game open and under control at all times and although they handed out 17 awards during the fray. they were deserving and also timely ones that prevented any major outbreaks that might have resulted later if not held in check. ' C O 0 They both proved on their whistles but didn't use them to a point where it delayed the game by being unnecessary, and clamped down on the high sticking and holding that so often are the preliminary . firebrands that result in serious outbreaks. The players seemed to sense their attitude right from the . start of the game that they would not go for any fooling or back- chatter, and took their awards without so much as a backward y glance. They did have little shoving and to do a pushing to break up a couple of pending out- , breaks. but their prompt action nipped them all in the bud. C I 0 But that game has already be- come past history. ind what everybody is looking forward to. - is the second clash that is slated for the Forum here tonight. It is . bound to be another keenly con- tested session and fans are all primed for the action after the opening tilt here Saturday. It will be an important one for both clubs. A win for the locals can really put them in the drivers seat. while a victory will be right in line with Halifax hopes with the next two games to look for- ward to over home ice and put them right back in the swim for - the league title. 0 I O The clash will probably even more spirited one than the opening session. now that the tender edge of starting off a. ser- : SIIAP Silt!-.FIlfISIlIliB Rolls of film developed and printed and sent out the some day.
