The other meaning of the word' gentle
man is far from complex and difficult to-
deflne. In common parlance a gentleman
is the opposite to what is generally called
'a :cad.’ In this :sense the humbleet
peasant may be a perfect gentleman, and
the lordliest of dukes an absolute cad,

of a gentleman -will ever prevent him
