Previous to their departure, they were waited on by the officials of the Railway, who presented them with an address, accompanied by siiver mounted rifles. Messrs. Butler, Pitken & C>., 476 Broadway, New York, and concerned vhe marvellous cure of Mr. Ezra D. Clarkson, near Newark, N. J., of a ter- rible case of rheumatism, which other remedies had failed even to alleviate. He was on his way to a hospital when Mr. Daven- rt met him and induced him to try St. acobs Oil, with the result named, —Cleveland {O0.) Practieal Farmer. _ ?d>--- A senies of disastrous accidents occurred on the 26th ult., on the Fort Wayue road, near Chicago. A stock train consisting of thirty cars of hogs was run into at the 43rd street crorsing, by a Grand Trunk passenger train, Fully half the hogs were killed at this point, though not much damage resulted to other property. After the wreck was cleared the balance of the stock proceeded south until it reached 55th street, where it was run into by a Fort Wayne passenger train. Ergineer Hilbert, of the passenger train, was killed. Several cars were thrown from the track, and what hogs escaped the first accident were finished up in the sccond. Twenty theusand dollars worth were killed altogether. ---—+> - —-- Mary O’Briey, a tramp, about forty years of age, was lecked up in the Fifth Precinct Station house, Brooklyn, Thursday night, for intoxication. Later in the evening Edward @’Brien, about the same age as the woman, and also atramp, was accommodated at the same station house, but was putin a cell for assaulting a fellow-lodger. In Justice Nasher’s court, yeaterday, the O’Briens recognized each other as man and wife. It was the first time they had met since fifteen years ago, O’Brien, then a hearty young man, kissed his ponent wife, good-bye on the quay at Cork, an started to make a happy home for her in America. Degraded as were the victims of rum and idleness, the meeting between them was affecting. Justice Nasher inflicted light penalties on both. So says the New York Times. - a _— Tuer case of Dr. Lamson, from its inter- national character, is likely to attract a large amount of attention both in England and America. Dr. Lamson is accused and in fact condemned of having poisoned a relative of his with aconite, a poison which has been very imperfectly defined by the experts and which leaves some indications which are not common to other poisons. In Dr. Lamson’s case there was some very strong presumptive evidence sgainst him, it being shown that he had made large purchases of the ,oison of which the vic- tim was supposed to have died. A very strong movement has since been started in favor of the accused doctor, main'ty on the ground of his alleged insanity, and some very influentially signed memorials have been for- warded from the United States to the Home Government asking for Dr. Lamson’s pardon on that ground. It is doubtful if these views will prevail ; unless he can be proved to be wholly irresponsible, which does not seem te be possible from auy evidence presented. + Irish National Land League. Tie regular meeting of the Land League was held last evening, at eight o'clock, in St. Patrick’s Hall. M. P. Hogan, Esq., Presi- dent, in the chair. A number of new members became enrolled, and banded in their subscriptions. The sum of $25.00 was received from the Treasurer of the ‘Fanny Parnell Branch,” Avondale. A unanimous vote of thanks was psssed to the above Branch for its timely centribution. George O'Neill, Esq., President of the same Branch, was called upon. He instanced some ef kis own early experience in Ireland, and held in his hand a Repeal Association ticket, signed by Thos. Math. Ray, dated September, 1843, showing the early interest he had manifested in Ireland’s cause. He also gave some fine renditions of appropriate selections of poetry; and replied, in suitable terms, to the vote of thanks passed. to himself, and te the League of Avondale. Mr. ©. D, Collins briefly reviewed the pres- ent situation in [relund, and touched on the agitationjnow going on for ‘‘ Home Rule.” Mr. B. Doherty referred to the proposition made by some humane persons—so-called—for the Irish people to rise up and leave the land. He thought that parties who spoke thus were no friends of Ireland. The President congratulated Mr. O'Neill on the success which has attended the ‘‘Fanny Parnell Branch”; and closed with the an- nouncement that the League would hold a Very interesting meeting in St. Patrick’s Hall, cn ee ee TELEGRAPHIG NEWS.
