Sim,—A correspondent in last week's ExaMIN@R euggests closing up 'h Strait t Beile Isle a8 a means of amel oratipg ur wintry climate. However desirabe « remember that we can only attaiu to it by *gencies the mostfar reaching and com ¢:! in their operations, for the great fea ure- of climate are determined by the operati- n f fires which dominate pet ouiy our «l be but the entire solar system. The question here properly is, how much dees the Belle I-le current at pres nt > fhe our climate? This current passes thre gh the strait of the same name between New- teundland and Labrador, which is twelve miles wide, and bears, in the early psrt of suuamer, & considerable number of icebergs ‘nto che northern part of the gulf. Tine ive is nut seen south of Cape George, N-w- toundland, and Cape Whi tle, Labrador, for it is here met by an impurtant current entering the guit from the Atlantic be- tween Newfoundland and Ups Bret, and ty the current of the mver St. Law- rence This Atlantic eurrent is a most impor- tant one to usIs anders. It is composed of a branch of the Gulf Stream united with «spur of the Labrador current, and enters the Gelt along the southern shore of New- foundiand, It proceeds northwest as far as Anticosti Island, completely subteuding ‘he Belie Isic current and tercimg it to \-Ke » submarine course in the deep sound ings of the Gulf A branch of -his A - I ntic current bends svuthwea: by the Magdalens, washes the Norih Shore of P. E. Island, and, passing by the North Cape to Bay Chaleur enters the Norihum- berland Strait, and makes a complete cir- cuit of our Province. The whole uf the middle and southern parts of the Guit of St. Lawrence are oc- cupied by the waters of the St Lawrence current, which, between Gaspe and Auti- 3 costi, has a velocity of two or three iniies an hour, and the waters of the Atlantic current which we have just describ- ed. The Believe Isle currenuis confined tu that northern sinus of the Gulf called by geogr:phers the Strait of Beile I le, «x teading trom Balle [sie to Capes Whitt e and George. Its cold waters pasa our of the Gu f as a submerine current between Capes Ray and Nerth, and have nn in- fluence ou the surface of the southern partes Ph us we see that the coll wa ers of the Belle Isle curren: are so restricted to the ‘northern p-rt of the Gulf that they can have no appreecimble effect on the climate of P. E leland. Their chilling breath 1s borne by the general atmospheric flow away towards the Atlantic, and nor towatds us ; while the icy stream its: If is ¢ »mplete- ly hedged off by the bros flow of warmer water from the Atlantic. If, thea, the Belle IsJe current does not at present sensibly affec: our climate, the ,preject tv spend millions of mony in shut- ting it off does not commend itself as being | the mst prudent economy. | The comparative coolness of our climate is determined by the fact that we are siruated on the eastern side of the North ; Am-rican continent, and the prevailing easterly flow of the atmosphere brings the ‘frigid temperature of the continental winters down upon us; while our springs are delayed by the melting of the large quantities of ice which form in the Gult of _S. Lawrence, and by the low temperature |of the Boreal current which presses down close to the eastern shure of the Continent. ; But if our springs are late our autumns are ‘mild and open, and our summers tempered from the same reason, viz. : the expanse of | water around us The unusu+l warmth of the past season was not peculiar toP E Island, but common to | the Korth American continent, and was prob- ‘ably produced by the stronger flow of the southwest passage wind, which prevented the descent of cold waves from the Arctic regivns These c ld waves seem to have been relegated for this season to the European continen , A further proof of the dependence of our climate on continental influence is afforded by the fact that the Bureau at Toronto is able to furnish us daily probanilities of the weather for the Maritime Provinces. This is only done by a knowledge of the stmosph ric movements going on over the whole contivent. If, then, our climate is dependent upon those great cusmica] and continental agencies which determine the movements of the atmospheric ocean which wraps roand our globe, it strikes us as not likely to be much ffected by any alteration which we could make in the flow of an insignificant s ream like Belle Isie current. —— <a Rem-mber the cleariag out sate of beets snd shoes at stamper’s Co-ner Tae sho. has t> b- vacat- ed for butiding pu poses. A new police bill was formulated about. twelve months ago, and when it came on| for discussion it was decided that it shuuid be read that day six mouths, which being interpreted, meant that its postponement should, in reslity, be indefiaite. fort- night ago, however, the bill arose, Phosnix- hike, from the ashes to which so many would have consigned it, and wae triumphantly carried, in a manner that was unluvoked fur, even by the must sanguine. Glasgow is commoniy supposed to be u drunken city, and the whisky shops that everywhere abound, yive it undoubtedly ua- deuisble pre-eminenc- in that dr ction; but a strong aud growing temperance sen iment has been steadily gsining ground The Y M {. A. organized o pieb-sci:e some time back, to ascertain the professed opinion on the drinking question One hundred and fifty; thousand houses were vieted, and voting prpera left. More than 100000 of there papers were filled ap and returned, constitut- ing the largest vote of its kind ever taken in the United Kingdom. The question sub mitted read as follows: ‘Are you in favor of, iocal option?” Seventy-eight thousand | answers in the effi mative; 8090 negacives. Ky ten te one, theretoie, it wes ecided al | the power over the liquor traffic should be placed in the hands of the people lf this vote representa the voice of Scotland, and she will be true t> her convictious at the next election, the m+mbers whom she will return to Parliament will be pl-dged to this measure. Oa the question of the total prohibition of the drink ursthe, 57,000 ‘ou eholders voted in favor of the messure; 19,00) against it, Phat which perh«ps makes the vute the more remarkable is the fact that the larger number of those voting for a clean swerp of the liquor ureffic were to be fuund among the indaststl classes, and not among the weaithier inhabi- tanis of the city. The result of the in'erest caused by this expreasion of pub ic opiniun was shown in the muscipal election, tre early part of last month, which turned almost entirely on the emperance quesica.
