British Food Market Canadian farm producers will derive cold comfort from Agriculture Minister Gardin- =r's statement that he "disagrees" with Psritailfs announced intention of switching ‘o European supplies for food she formerly ourchased in Canada. This policy has been practically forced upon the United Kingdom, ‘hrough circumstances which it was the liusiness of the Canadian Government to have forseen. Formerly the United States allowed the Marshal fund to be spent part- ly in buying Canadian agricultural products for Britain. Washington now insists that the fund must be used for purchasing Ani- erican products. Britain has not any dol- lars of her own to spend in Canada, and it is natural that she should switch her orders to farm producing countries in the sterling On the other hand, of course, in so she can hardly expect to develop her agricultural machinery trade in this "ountigv. Our farmers, particularly in Flastern Canada. will be seriously affected 0y losing the British egg and bacon markets. ‘Fhcy must find other outlets, and this may mean a change in our import as well as ex- port. trade to Britain's disadvantage. Just how far Canadian government policies could have prevented this unfortun- ate trend is a matter of dispute. The situa- tion is certainly not improved by provoca- tive comments from our Federal Minister of Agriculture, whose business it is to sal- vage what is left of our British farm mar- kets, and who should have anticipated the course of events which were clearly enough indicated, even before the last Federal elec- flOIl. Had our farmers been told the truth at that time, they would be in a better position to cope with their export market problem today. SATURDAY, NOV. l9. 1949 yea. ‘IOIIT’; llahlilet Appointments It ls to be hoped that when Prime Mili- ister St. Laurent gets round to making his promised new cabinet appointments, he will not forget Prince Edward Island. This Prov- ince lost its Cabinet representation when the late Colonel Ralston was squeezed out on the Conscription issue during the war. and we have been penalized ever since. With three Liberal Island members to choose from-one of them parliamentary deputy for the Minister of Fisheries-there should be no difficulty in making the appointment. The Prime. Minister, on his campaign visit here. lauded the qualifications of all three. New departments shortly to be created will cover Citizenship and Immigration, Re- sources and Development, and lVlines alid Technical Surveys. The Ottawa Journal an- ticipates that. Mr. St. Laurent will be “up against the old Canadian problem of provid- ing cabinet. representation on a basis 0f longitude and latitude,” and may have 10 "accommodate departments to ministers ill- stcad of ministers to departments." His changes. the Journal notes sadly, “Will OI coilrse mean extra administrative cost. On the contrary, the central figure in the matter, a nine-year-old Wolf Cub from Truro. N. S., merits sober and serious respect for his adherence to Boy Scout traditions and his obedience to the training he has received. “The Governor-General. Vlscllunt Alex‘ under, was decorating the y°llflg_slel' (Wayne Crowell) With the 59°“ S11v6’ Cross for bravery, awarded for rescue of another boy from drowning. When His Ex- cellency extended his right hand in custom- ary congratulations, the Cub firmly Put W! his left hand in conformity with the B0)’ Scout code. And he kept it out until the Governor-General corrected his faux-pas and switched hands. "m, my," concludes the Gazette, “de- 1 pat on the back for standing his mi. ltmh mu-dv independence, in THE GUARDIAN. CHARLOTTIYFOWN and the possible displeasure. of His Excel. lency. After all, Viscount Alexander should have known better; he is the Chief Scout for Canada.“ Breaking Eggs To Make llll Umelet The St. John's Evening ‘Telegram re- ports that farmers "throughout Newfound- land” are becoming worried over the. amount of vegetables coming into that Prov- ince from Prince Edward Island. Their concern is ilnderstandable for the avail- ability of P. E. I. produce will certainly have the effect of lowering food prices in New- foundland. lf the Old Colony were self- sufficient in that direction the trade would simply never develop, but as matters stand we feel that both Provinces are benefiting by it, as a nearby market and as a source of supply of produce needed to provide an adequate and varied diet. It would be ideal if the extra foodstuffs could be mar- keted there without reducing the price of the relatively small amount produced locally, but ilnfortilnately markets do not behave that way. EDITORIAL NOTES if the United Kingdom desires to sell agricultural machinery here she will have to buy supplies where she sells. O Jamaica has no fewer than 6,800,000 stems of bananas to export this year, valued at about $6,120,000. This should end the slogan, “we have got no bananas today." O O I The Railway Association's contention that highway transport be assessed a great- er share of the cost of building the roads it uses requires detailed investigation. The impression has long been that vehicle aild gasoline taxes exceeded construction costs. O U The United States Army has produced a mechanical cow which is reported to pro- duce pasteurized, homogenized. grade-A milk. The difference between it and Bossie, however, is that the mechanical monster rc- quires milk products to work on. I I Mayor F. W. Storey of Monclon, has been in Ottawa for talks with government officials. He met briefly with Transport Minister Chevrier. Trade Minister Howe and Veterans Minister Gregg. lt. is understood that terminal facilities for air line passeng- ers at Moncton airport were among items discussed. o o O The occupation of (lcrmany cost Britain £590,000,000 t$l,829.00tl,0fltll up to last March 31. The figure was supplied to the House of Commons by Foreign Undersecre- tary CITTiSiOPIlOl‘ P. lliayheiv. lliayhew’ said the total included {$590,000,000 for military‘ and civil occupation costs. and £200,000.00ll for aid to the German economy. According to the recent Dominion pub- lication on taxation statistics, of all the classes of businesses listed under the head- ing “Manufacturing" the only group which reported no losses for the year 1947 was Silgar Refining. It. would seem that thc safest business to get into is one based on government policy’ rather than economic considerations. O A Nova Scolian Senator, Hon. J. .1. Kin- ley, has been recalling the prosperity the Maritimes once enjoyed through their trade with the West Indies. Thai. trade could be revived if the West indies could afford t0 buy our products, which they can only do if we buy their fruit. sugar, mol- asses and rum. I o I Viscount I-‘crdinartl Dc Lcs-scps, French diplomat, born this dalc 1805. After re- tiring from the service in 1840. he conceiv- ed the project of making thc Suez Canal. He introduced the scheme to thc French Government in 1854. but received but scant encouragement. Four years later obtaining a concession from Said Pasha represent- ing Egypt. he organized a company and the work began in 1859, and the canal was opened ten years later. O I o When the U. S. Senate began a new leg- islative day one afternoon last week, it found it was without a chaplain to begin with prayer. For the first time in con- gressional memory the Vice President took over the duty. Said Mr. Alben Barkley: “I can pray. That's every man's preroga- tive.” Then, asking the Senate to join him. Barkley prayed: “Lord, in these days of uncertainty, we ask for and thank Thee for the boon of Thy guidance and direction.
