He lived for a time in Sandwich, on Cape Cod, and then settled in this town. By trade he is a carriage builder. During the civil war be served in Co. B. 7th Massachusetts regiment, and is now a member of Union post 50, G. A. R. enthusiastic Christ.lan,and for a long time went about as an evangelist. He used to be a conspicuous figure in the devotional meetings of the Second Advsntists and Methodists. He isnow a member of the Episcopal church. Several years arr`o he became deeply interested in mission work-in this town and his first formal innovation was the establishment of a mission in ix building on Washington st. formerly devoted to the sale of liquor. Sebsequently he nllened a mission in the more central section of the town, _where be remained untill he erected the present mission building on Pleasant st. In his efforts to establish permanent mission headquarters, he was assisted by all of the Protestant churches and by E. C. Swift of Chicago and others. The mission building, which has a seating capacity of l00, is nicely furnished. ’l‘he floor is carpeted and the walls adorned with numerous pictures. The building is healed with a stove,lighted by electricity, and the seats are all cushioned. There in a pulpit and organ on the platform. All of the local clergyman assist in the services, which are held at times on Sun- days and week days, so as not to interfere with regular church services. Mr. Shaw makes a specialty of caring for unfortunate men, and in the winter itlneranta are privileged to sleep in the mission building and secure their meals free of expense ln his home. He paysf special attention to men addicted to intemperance, visiting them at their homes and acting as tbetr friend when- ever they are arraigned in court.
