force. and believes that in doing so he
will be at the front as soon as the

asked as to the conditions at the
Canadian quarters. he said " Rotten "
was the word? This is, he remarked,
due to the tremendous amount of rain
that has fallen and is no reflection
on the authorities, who had no means
of grappling with such conditions. Ono
result of the weather conditlolls is ii
great deal of sickness. Most all of thc
Csnnillails are now living in huts,
which arc built oi' corrugated iron. one
storey ill height and measure 00 by
20 feet. Each of these structures con-
tains a stove and consists of- one big
room. ily this means accommodation
is provided for sixty men. These
huts arc dormitory. dining saloon and
recreation room all combined. Many
colds arc probably traceable to thc
drafty floors in the llllts. which were
made single and with new lumber. mill
consequently now serve as ii. means of
admitting air miller too freely. The
rain. said Lieut. Curley, is terrific.
Row boats are now being used in the
main streets. Tile water in mnliy
cases in the streets is three feet and
over in depth. At Aineslnlry, near
Bulforil Camp. a sad illcldellt occurred
recently, said Lieut. Curley. One
night in the blackness lr young Cann-
diari attempted to cross rl little bridge
spanning the street. but below the
level of the water. The swiftlly flow-
ing steam took liim off his feet and
carried him to his death.
Despite the rather unpleasant nnd
unsanitary conditions the men are.
now face to face witll, there is in

men realise that the conditions ili
which they find themselves are un-
