The Oficial Gazette summons Parliament for the despatch of business on the 13th of Feb- ruary. A Surveying party under the charge of Wil- liam Murrdock is about to start for French River. An address wil! be presented to the Govern - or General, on Monday next, by the Council of the Dominion Rifle Association. Lonpbon, Jan. 5. The striking employes at all points in the Midland Railway remain very firm. The Company is filling their places with porters and others, but it is currently reported at Nottingham that the drivers will strike en masse if incompetent persons are employed. Local and Other Items. Onty 80,000 people were arrested by the police in New York last year. Ir is stated that Newfoundland is to receive ! one million dollars as its share of the Fisheries Award. Tue Minister of Marine and Fisheries will leave by the ‘‘ Northern Light” expressen route for Ottawa this morning. Concert.—-A Concert by the Orange Young Britons of Charlottetown, will be given in Hunter River Hall, on Wednesday evening, Sth inst., at 7.30 o'clock. Tuer Quebec Telegraph says the four local banks in that city have under discount at present $10,702,896 of promissory notes be- longing to the trade. Aw American newspaper, commenting on the low prices in which everything can now be pought, estimates that $100 in 1860 equalled in purchasing power $126 in 1869, $124 in 1873, and $$1.67 in 1878. This shows a reduction 1n the cost of living of over 34 per cent, in five years. TrousLe Dors NoT COME Sinaty.—Mrs. McKenzie, of Rose Valley, has buried her husband and two children since last fall. She now lies low with diptheria. A meeting of the City Council is summoned for to-morrow evening to consider a by-law relating to billiard tables, for the purpose of regulating the same. D. D. G. M. BREMNER, assisted by the rand officers, will install the officers of St. Tawrence Lodge, at Oddfellow’s Hall this evening at 8.30. Joux GARDINER appeared at the Stipen- diary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon, charged with committing a brutal assault on his sister in-law with whom he has been staying. Mrs. Gardiner was unable to appear at Court, and the prisoner was remanded for eight days. Mr. Sze See Jones, of Charlottetown, has put in one of his Tubular Wells and Patent Pumps near the station at Frederic- ton, for E. J. Crabbe, merchant. The water is soft and pure. Mr. Crabbe be- lives in having the comforts of this life. Yarmovutu owns 3 steamers, 668 tons; 65 ships, 75,659 tons; 85 barques, 67,813 tons; 14 brigs, 2,845 tons; 130 schooners, 6,530 tons. ‘Total, 297 vessels, 153,515 tons. Increase last year, 9 vessels, 11,052 tons. A pretty good showing as times go. Turee golden weddings were celebrated in Nova Scotia last week. The Halifax Herald thinks ‘‘ There must have been something re- markable in the stock of those who married in 1828-9, judging by the unusual number of rolden weddings which have been lately cele- rated.” Beuiveav Mrxus.—The following has been communicated to the Truro Sun from the Beli- veau Mines: ‘‘ Our Diamond Borer is making good progress. The prospects continue to 1m- prove in the pit as well.” Tue hearing of appeals from the recent Civic assessment was commenced »y the Stipendiary Magistrate this forenoon. The appeals from Ward l are seventy-three in number; Ward 2, sixty ; Ward 3, forty-nine ; Ward 4, one hundred and three ; and Ward 6, one hundred and twenty. ‘The Magistrate commenced at Ward 1. Those from the other wards are not likely to be heard for some days. But sixty have been disposed of to day. [ja6 6ieod wh WE are pleased to learn that a detach- ment of Major Morris’ Battery of Garrison Artillery have been declared the winners in a shifting ordnance competition, open to all Garrison Artillery aftiliated with the Do- minion of Canada Artillery Association. The shift in this competition consisted in mounting a 3J-pr. gun, resting on two short skids on the ground, up the rear of a stand- ing garrison carriage, and lowering it into the trunnion holes, replacing stores and making the gun ready for service. This the detachment succeeded in doing in one minute and twenty-five seconds, beating the best time made against them by half a minute.
