‘‘O Wad Some Power,” Ftc. THF KAEDIVE AND THE HIGHLANDE®. | A curious ineident happened the other day in the garden of the Ghezereh palace where the Khedive is in the habit of strolling about after lunch. | The garden is surrounded by the Nile | and by very high walls, and is vigilant. ly guarded by both Highlanders and | Cireassions. The Khedive was walking | in the shade of some palm trees unat—| tended and dressed as an ordinary! Egyptian official (Zarboush) black, | clerically cut coat, tweed trousers and | Sybseribed Capital patent leathershoes. Nothing about| him indicated his rank. Passing by a narrow gateway the Khedive noticed a tall Highlander pecing to and fro on} sentry duty. His Highness, who speaks | English quite fluently, asked the} sentry “ Hew do you like Kgypt?”’| The Highlander—a soldier of the gal lant Forty-second (the black watch), | who afterwards recounted te me the} conversation that ensued —replied, | Got to like it pretty well, now that} wo are in barracks,” and, glad to find | any one who could talk Knglish, and | not dreaming who his interieeutor was, the Scotchman continued the cenver-| sation by asking,“ What sort of al berth have you got here?” The! Khedive replied, ** Oh, not a bad one ;| I am attached to the palace.” The Highlander then continued, * What | sort ofa chap is this ‘ere Khedive. He! must be a rum ,un from allI hear.”! The Khedive, whose good nature is | proverbial, asked ** What do you hear! about bin?" The Scott replied: — | * Well, as near as I can make out, this Khedive is about the worst man of the! whole lot of ‘em, He ain’t got do sort; o courage ner manhood about him,| and as soon as we get out of this old,! Arabi'’s beggars will make a sort of | ‘haggis’ out of him.” The conversation | was at this interesting point sinter-- | rupted by the appearance of the guard relief, who presented arms to the| Kheiive, and then revealed to the} Highlander, now utteriy discomfited | and as red as a lobster, the fact that he | had been talking to no less a personage | than the successor of the Pharohs.—N. Work has been commenced | on the new railway and traffic bridge, and general manager Van Horne has given assurance of the construction of | suitable freight and passenger depots at West Lynn as well as at Emerson, | i | The Parliament of Germany has passed alaw which virtually probibits ths importation of American pork. The ostensible reason is the prevalence of trichine in American hogs, bat it is not uolikely that trade interests have been fully as powerful a consideration as that of the public health, as the! trichina spiralis is a cosmopolitan | creature, and goes for the most ad- jacent hog irrespective of nationality or color. An agitation against Americah pork was set on foot in France some years ago and resulted in similar statu- -tory limitations as to-its importation and sale. The working classes, how- ever, to many of whom American pork was the only flesh-meat attainable, raised such an opposition that the law! was materially modified. It is right that the public should be protected from unwholesome food, but if the measure has been made too sweeping in | order to raise food prices it arade piece of legislation that will|CANNE hardly be sanctioned by public senti- mebt.
