A hole was drilled in the top of the safe and two others in the door for the purpose of shattering the lock. Doidge, of 372 Wellesley Street, Loronto, a fourth-year undergraduate of Toronto University, won “The Canadian Queen’s” free trip to Europe by making over eleven hundred words from letters contained in the name of that mag- azine. Mr. Doidge worked over seventy hours to accvmplish the task. He sails by the Parisian Sept. 3d, and will be abroad three months. The publishers ,of ‘The Queen” will soou announce another free trip to Europe word contest, with $200 for ex- penses. Union prints : ‘‘ Not long ago, a young man of this city had a most favorable opportunity to enter a business house in this state at a large increase over his present salary, with a rospect of soon getting a place'in the firm. His recommendations were first-class, and the officers of the institution were decidedly pleas- ed with his appearance They, however, made him no proposals, nor did they state their favorable impressions. A gentleman of this city was requested to ascertain whers the young man spent his evenings, and what class of young men were his associates. It was found that he spent several nights of the week in a billiard hall on Main Street, and Sunday afternoon drove a hired span into the country with three other young men. Pro- vincial governments will be asked to co- operate. A Fatai Run. Reavine, Pa., Aug. 22. Mount Penn gravity railroad mountain route encircles Mount Penn . 8C) feet above Reading. Cars are taken from the city to the top of the mountain and the returning cars allowed to go down the mountain by gravity by ancther route to the point “f starting. About 10.80 this morning a car containing about 18 passengers was taken from the sta- tion to the top of the mountain and when it reached the point where the gravity portion of the road commenced, the engine was detached. Tne car ran away while the passengers were still on board. The distance to the point of start- ing was five miles and this was covered by the runaway car in about three minutes. Whenthe car reached the foot of the plane it jumped the track and rolled down a 50 foot enbankment landing upside down, with the passengers inside. Four were killed and two injured. A Atter many close calls, Manitoba got’ a touch of frost last night. There were two degrees of frost in Winnipeg, and this was general throughout the Province.
