' A rough boat has been carried in- ‘to the caverns piece by piece, and _it is hoped that shortly the myster- -iious body of water will be men to the public. The lake is in a cavern-a continuation of the "White Scar" cavern system - and is about 300 yards long and 20 feet wide. The water is crystal clear but looks black on account of the tremendous depth. ‘The roof is of solid limes stone, in twhlch are a. number of natural fun- fnels, or "chimneys" _ This mysterious' lake is more than 500 feet below the top of the moun- tain arid over a mile from the hill- _sids entrances to the caverns. At its extreme end the canyon is blocked !by a great fall of rock. which. weighing hundreds ol tons, lies across the river. Other ponder-ous masses of limestone hang at strange' angles. The gallery is rich in fossils of coral and rallies of the earliest vegetation of the Palaeozoic age, M>l'll€ll‘l9-H8 uk* scc.ooo,0oo years asc.
