Album: build a horse Artist: The Tuesdays Label: Independent build a horse is an excellent album from the Tuesdays - all the more impressive for being recorded over three nights by a band only together for five months. The album showcases a more thoughtful side of the Tuesdays, one that was not as obvious during the up-tempo fun of the Charlottetown country group’s live performances. Slower, mellow songs like “That’s alright,” “Let’s build a horse,” and “Don’t know why,” have a beautiful, intimate feeling to them, while “Tricked you,” one of the stand- out songs of the album, is as devastat- ingly sad as the slow trickle of John Mullins’ lap steel guitar. There is a warmth which emanates from nearly every song on this album; a fullness which comes from Craig Macpherson’s accordion, Dan Currie’s banjo pickin’, and _ Kristina Fourgeron’s backing vocals. Some of the more upbeat tracks, “Moonshine,” and “Battle song,” for example, suffer a little on build a horse, losing some of the energy and enthusiasm which car- ried them so successfully during the ieee ere Tuesdays’ live shows. Dennis Ellsworth will be a surprise for anyone who is only familiar with him as lead singer of The Rude Mechanicals. Ellsworth pulls off nearly everything he tries, but despite his fine perform- ance, it is unfortunate that such a tal- ented group of singers (Steve Balderston, Dan Currie, Pat Deighan) are largely confined to backing vocals, particularly when the group approach to song writing was so successful. One hopes that, despite the departure of “band leader” Dennis Ellsworth, this will not be the last that is heard of the Tuesdays. -Matthew DORRELL Showing at City Cinema this week Time Regained and The Center of the World Times and Descriptions at www.citycinema.net 368-3669 The Event Tent wednesday, september 19 thursday, september 20 friday, september 21 saturday, september 22 sunday, september 23 monday, september 2 tuesday, september wednesday, september 26 thursday, september 27 friday, september 28 saturday, september 29 sunday, september 30 bar acts vacant Baba’s Lounge: The New Drifts The Barn: Chris Colepaugh and the Cosmic Crew Olde Dublin Pub: Boys Next Door Baba’s Lounge: Port Citizen The Barn: The Dalai Lamas Big Momma’s Pub: Paul MacAusland Brennan’s: Rock Ranger Melon’s: Split Lip Olde Dublin Pub: Boys Next Door Peake’s Quay: Roger Jones Baba’s Lounge: Mitch Schurman Band The Barn: Moses Mayes and the Funk Family Orchestra Brennan’s: Eyes for Telescopes Olde Dublin Pub: Boys Next Door Peake’s Quay: Roger Jones The Sports Page: Chris Shepard vacant vacant Baba’s Lounge: Johnny Cocktail vacant Baba’s Lounge: Barry Mack The Barn: The Jimmy Swift Band Brennan’s: Chamber Lane Olde Dublin Pub: Boys in the Kitchen Baba’s Lounge: Dysfunctional Dads The Barn: The Pocket Dwellers Big Momma’s Pub: Paul MacAusland Brennan’s: Eyes for Telescopes Melon’s: Split Lip Olde Dublin Pub: Boys in the Kitchen Baba’s Lounge: The Blueprints The Barn: The Jimmy Swift Band Brennan’s: Flying Boat Olde Dublin Pub: Boys in the Kitchen vacant the cadre
