ENGINEERS' CAFID.-The N.C.0.'s of the Engineer Corps of the first Canadian expeditionary force, at Salis- bury Plaius. issued a very nice Christ- mas and New Year (lard, emblematic oi’ their compally. which they sent as greetings to their friellds back home. A number oi’ the cards have just been received by friends here. On the front cover of the card is the coat of arms of the mess. a circle with the words. " N.C.0.‘s Mess. Canadian Engineers," surroullded by a wreath and mounted wltll a crown. in the centre is a beaver. Below this is a scroll. on which appears, “ First Can- adian Expeditionary Force." The back cover has the names of all the _N.C.0.’s. The inside leaflet has a photo ol' ' the departure oi their majeiitles fronl.tha Canadian Engin- eers' lines in an automobile, while the boys wave their hats and cheer. On the opposite page of the leaiiet ls the word "From," with a blank for the name of the sender, followed by the words, " and all members of the Non- Commissioned Officers' Mess. Cana- dian Engineers. First Canadian Expe- ditionary Force, with best wishes for a'Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Flying Sheds. Nr Durrlngton. Salisbury Plains, -Christmas 1914." THE FIRE AT FREDERICTON. - The following particulars have been given regarding the tire at Fredericton last week. The fire start- ed at 3 Friday morning -(llot Satur- day). There were only two men ill the house at the time (Mr. Weeks and his son Heber). lt becalne evident very shortly after the fire was dis- covered that it could not be checked so both occupants ran to the neighbors for help. ln due time men were there to the number of 12 or 15 who work- ed like bricks to remove furniture. They succeeded ill clearing out the large sitting-room, parlor and one bedroom. Everything upstairs was des- troyed this liicluded mucll bedroom furniture alld clothing. Everything in the kitclleii was burned and about 450 bushels of potatoes and other materi- al was lost in the cellar. \Vltll great . difficulty the woodshell, containing a - year's dry hardwood, was saved. For- tunately the wind was light and from the south east which was off the .large outbuildings- otherwise the loss would have very far exceeded $3000. There was only $750 insur- ance oil the house--which would hard- ly cover loss of furniture destroyed. Mr. Weeks will rebuild in the spring. INCREASED PRODUCTION. - Tile Canadian, Countryman of Jan. 16th., has a great deal to say about plnlliiillg for an illcreased farm productioil ill Canada this year. The ,British gov- erllmellt even before Austra1in's crop was kllolvn to be a total failure and allowlllg for fifty - nllllioll bushels shortage in Cinadafs yield put the ` 1914 wheat shortagelat three hundred and seventeen niii-li'oll busllels. If ‘ `Canada`s grain crops are actually doubled this year prices are allllost sure to be as high as they are today, or even higher. Tile termination ot' the war would have little influence oil this. Even before the wal' broke there was recognized the great shortage of ment alld animal products. This ,shortage exists ‘now in_all acute form, ill horses, eggs, "cheese, etc. Belgium has lost pracllcally every milking cow, and Germany. Austria and to some extent France and Britain are being compelled to sacrifice a great number of cattle, hogs. sheep and poultry.
