When hate-motivated incidents oc- cur, and the evidence of the last few years suggests that they happen with greater fre- quency than we care to admit, the highest offic- ers of the university need to exercise their full authority in condemning these attacks and cor- recting the underlying problems which encour- age such incidents. Bias-motivated incidents are awful, but they also offer a unique opportu- nity for raising consciousness and for shifting the climate of opinion on campus. These are only a fewsuggestions brought forward by John D’Emilio in his research on Gay and Lesbian Campus Life. There are many other studies being done as I write this article and may be explained later in the semester. As one homosexual male told me in the past; Homosexual life on the campus does not "Homosexual life on the campus does not have any real existence.” have any real existence. There exists many on campus who are gay but haveno organization to belong to. They live their life on campus with a feeling of not belonging. 6 He went on to say that if the role was reversed and the world had amajority of homosexuals in its population and you happened to be one of the minority of heterosexuals, and you were condemned and persecuted for being a heterosexual really deny- ing your homosexuality, would you alter your orientation to fit the need for the so-called ‘‘moral-majority,’’ or would you stand up for what you believed in your heart to be true? I will leave this question up to those who read this article. I hope to hear for you in the upcoming issues of the X-Press. **important** Those who are interested in further readings pertaining to this article should examine the following books: Herold, Edward R.
