MACEACHERN, Agent. ap2?i—Im (m 8) pat — TWO CARGOES OF Acadia and Vale Nut, NOW LANDING. The manager gazed first at the bond, then at the boy. The bewilderment in the great man’s face gave way to a cur- | ious smile. | “You are right,” he said at last. will take care of it. " manager paid the driver. “You know what you have to do,” said he to Asvin. pointing to the name over the door. “I will wait for you here.” When the clerk emerged again from Messrs. Gaze’s, he handed one of the two tickets he had purchased to the manager, who said quickly: “Good-by! And, by the way, remem- ber that I shall follow you now and see you off—from a distance.” Next morning Mr. Aspin was in Paris. There the devil in him revived to some extent. He determined to spend a couple of daysin the ‘City of Pleasure,” and to havea spree. Had not the man- ager promised to throw every one off the scent? Meantime the manager strolled down to Scotland Yard. There he gave his reasons for believing that a theft of valu- able bonds had taken place. It was im- ible to say how and by whom they been abstracted. He desired that an able detective should return with him to the city, to make an investigation and oe his advice. The request was prompt- complied with. Shortly before 3 o'clock the manager entered the bank, accompanied by two detectives from the Criminal Investi- — Department—namely, Inspector srump, and an officer in plain clothes. they were met by the cashier with the significant announcement that young Mr. Aspin had not returned after his dinner hour. “There can be no doubt,” added Mr. Price ‘‘ that our suspicions of him were well founded.” The manager and chief detective retir- éd to the sanctum of the former. Mr. Price and the second officer were asked to hold themselves in readiness for a summons to join them. The circumstances already entailed in the conversation between the Manager and the cashier were forthwith com- municated to the Inspector. The man- ager, moreover, opened thesafe, and de- scribed how the various parcels of bonds brought from the strong room had been laid in a row on the middle shelf: and how he had perceived, immediately after Mr. Aspin had left the room, a gap in the row where Messrs. Bulling & Co.’s script had been laid. The inspector was then requested to make a careful survey of the room and its contents. While he was doing this, the manager deftly slipped a paper from his pocket into the leaves of a ledger within the safe, much in the same manner, it will be remembered, as he had acted with an- other packet. Having done this, he “swung to” the door, which fastened with a snap. During this operation, Inspector Crump was looking in the opposite direc- tion. But he was doing so to some pur- pose; for he saw the movements of the manager clearly reflected in the ground lass partition separating the apartment rom the general office. There was something about the manager's action which fixed the circumstance in his mind. The detective next interviewed the cashier, whose story confirmed that of his superior officer. Now the duty of the detective was clear. Even if there remained a doubt as to Mr. Aspin’s guilt, it was absolutely necessary to discover what had become of that young gentleman. Inquiry was therefore made of his colleagues in the office; but no one could offer a clue to the missing clerk’s movements. *‘He has probably made for the Con tinent,” suggested the manager *‘Do you think so, sir?’ asked Inspecié- They descended from the cab a few yards off Gaze’s Tourist Office, and the | crossed to Calais yesterday. I have ar- ranged that he will not slip through our fingers. I cannot say more at present. The first information which I obtained concerning him was given by Messrs. Gaze, the tourist agents, at whose office he bought two tickets for Madrid. From the fact of his taking two tickets, it is presumed that he is travelling in com- pany with a female, possibly an accom- plice. He paid Messrs. Gaze with a fifty-pound note, of which I have taken the number. The question is, where did he get the fifty-pound note? Can you tell me?” At first the manager made no reply, and he averted his eyes under the steady but seemingly frank regard of the de- tective. Then, laboring under evident excitement, he stepped over to the safe, opened it, drew outa little drawer with- in, and exclaimed! “Good heavens, that’s gone, too!” *‘What do you mean, sir?” “I had a fifty-pound note in this drawer.” He referred to his pocket- book for the number and read it out. The detective smiled as he announced that his figures werethe same. The di- rectors looked at one another meaning- ly, being full of sympathy for their head official (To be Continued.) eon <a Don't Stull a Cold. If you do you will, nine times in ten, have a fever to starve. A cold is a shock received by the myriad nerves that bristle vear the surface of a human body. This sock is transmitted to the nerve centres, and then back tothe mucous membranes, forcing a great amount of blood to those membranes, creating a more or less severe irritation, snd consequent rise iu the tem pera’ure, fo.lowed by ch:lls. Excess of food in the stemach still more increases the temperature ; and, worst of all, helps clog the secretions or natural outlets of the body. Itis high time we brvke away from an old notion which, l.ke some others, has done more harm than good. For «example, in years past how many podz fever sufferers, burning with an interual fire and thirst, were hurried to an up irely gave because not allowed ceoling Crinks cr @ bit of ice by the old time treatment for fevers, as foolish as the adage for foois, At last one cunning delirious patient got to a pump of cold water and drark his fil; de- termined not to leave until the well ran dry, he slacked the fever, re covered, aud doctors learned a Jesaon. Experimenting with a severe cold is a dangerous custom, as must pe: sons try one remedy only until some friend tug ests an- other ‘‘sure cure,” as Mark Twain so humor- ously desc:ibes. When slight hoarseness or tightening of the nasal membran¢s warns cae of a skin cxpoeure or chill fiom wet, act promptly; a delay is dangerous. Wih chil- dren it may mean croup end strangulation; with adults, catarrh, bronchitis, perhaps poeumonia. If neghcted, nothing can pres vent the sneezing, red nose and woe begone look of a person with a cold.
