Fiercner, Esq, recently paid a visit to his numerous friends in this part of On Tuesday evening, March 22nd, inst., he delivered his very popular lecture—‘‘ Ten thousand feet abeuc the Sea,’ in Bethel Church, to a large and in- telligent audience. Mr. Alex. Scctt being appointed chairman, introduced the lecturer with a few appropriate remarks. The lecture, although occupying nearly two hours ia delivery, was listened to through- out with rapt attention—a fact which goes to show that Mr. Fletcher is able to give a real goed lecture, and that the people of North Lake and vicinity know how to ap- preciate one. Atthe conclusion, a unani- mous vote of thanks was #endered to the lecturer. He -replied by thanking the audience for the good order maintained, and the attention paid to the lecture. After singing an appropriate hymn the meeting dispersed. North Lake, March 26, 18853. ——_— A LARGE quantity of seed wheat daily ex- pected, direct from Canada.—W. P. CoLwiLt. {mar 29 6w wy 61 Religious Fanatics. There are in New Mexico about 2,000 persons belonging to the ‘*Hermano’s Peni- tents,” a fanatical religious sect who believe in periodical atonement of sin by inflicting on their bodies agonizing tortures. They were originally Roman Catholics, but Arch- bishop Laney banished them from the com- munity. Great care is taken to prevent discovery of their identity, all being mask- ed while conducting annual penance and devotees often travel hundreds of miles to undergo prescribed tortures. Los Griegos, a small Mexican village near Alburque, contains the great body of penitencer. Oa the 23rd inst. their ceremonies were inagurated by an inductory procession con- taining about 20 men and women. The process of purification by torture began at 10 o'clock. Five men, naked to the waists, barefooted and wearing black robes and hoods that completely concealed their iden- tity were seen to issue above the lodge house of the sect led by the master of cere- monies who carried a genuine cat-of-tails. Two bigh wooden crosses, weighing 250 pounds each, were placed on the shoulders of two of the self-tortarers. The sharp edged cut into the naked flesh causing blocd to spurt out and drop to the ground. One penitent produced a sharp goad which he thrust into the flush of his fellow sufferers from time to time while the procession moved up the street singing a wild chant in Spanish. The crosses were transferred to the shoulders of others, the attendants | meanwhile applying their raw hide whips mercilessly, each blow taking off ‘skin and bits of flesh. During the march not a groan was heard nor was a word spoken but just before reaching the goal an ordeal was en- couatered which tried the nerves of the boldest. For some distance before the doors cactus plants had been thickly strewn upon the ground and only broken whips and poles and blood bear witness to what tran- pired within. Issuing from the House the procession re formed and returned to their house of worship, and so the horrifying sp2ctacle continued, one band of penitents succeeding another until night, when a grand procession and chant wound up the exercises for the day.
