ane & Contagiousnhess of Consumption | Dr. Heron, one of the physicians to whom | Dr. Koch has entrusted the supply of lymph for London, has written a treatise on the | ‘* Communicability of Consumption,” which | has a special interest at the present time. ! Dr. Heron is of opinion that the bacillus discovered by Dr. Koch in 1882 is the sole cause of consumption and other tuberculous disease. Certain persons, he admits, may afford a more favorable soil than others for the crowth of the bacillus, and this tenden- ey may be inherited ; but he regards the prevalent notions sbout the inheritable quality of consumption a8 erroneous. As- suming, then, that the bacillus is the sole ause of tuberculosis, and bearing in mind hat consumption alone is the cause of from one-tifth to one-seventh of the mortality of the world, the question of checking the diffusion of bacillus is of the first import ance. The chief causes of diffusion, so far as known, are the expectoration of con- sumptive patients and the flesh and milk of tuberculous avimals. Dr. Heron believes that the expectoration of patients upon handkerchiefs, in rooms or on the streets, is a source of great danger to men and animals, and he describes several precau- tions by which the danger may be mini- mised. As to infection by meat, Dr. Heron | gives reason for the belief that about 4 per} cent. of the animals slaughtered for food in | Great Britain are more or less aff.cted by tuberculosis, and are therefore more or less sources of danger to those who consume them. The danger may be reduced to a mininum by effectual cooking. It is sug- gested that the destruction of the infected animals would, by the diminution of disease which it would bring about, become a dis- tinct source of saving to the public, and many sanitary reformers have advocated the construction of public abattoirs, in whicn all the animals slaughtered could bo thor- cughly inspected by competent persons. Milk is another medium through which tuberculosis is spread. It is said that the danger in this case may be avoided by thor- ough boiling. -——>- <> -aa News Notes. Eighteen years ago there were few better known names throughout the English speaking world than that of Arthur Orton the ‘*Tich- bourn Claimant.” Now he is almost forgotten eutside of England, but there he still appears to retain suflicieut notoriety to enable him to command a salary of £10 per week for drawing beer in a big saluon in Birmingham. A clergyman iu Vienna, feeling himself called upon to stem the public esteem of Prof. Koch, reminded his congregation that whatever Koch might still discover and in- vent, and whatever methods of death he might do away with, he never could drive death out of the world, and that religion had lost none of its importance by the ad- vance of science. A Brooklyn girl, who is an heiress, but whose property is in the care of,a trust company, applied to the president for money with which to buy a sealskin sacque. He refused on the ground that it was a luxury. The girl then applied to the supreme court through a lawyer for per- mission, and it was granted, and in less than two hours the young lady was wearing the best one she could find. The hatching of eggs by artificial heat has been pursued in Egypt from time imme- morial and there are great establishments where the business is followed. One of these hatches about 234,000 chickens an- nually. The number of chickens hatched in this manner fthreughout Egypt is es- timated at 75,000,000, and would, under ordinary circumstances, require 1,500,000 mothers. The papers of Kansas and Nebraska say that unless some effective system of irriga- tion can be introduced, the farmers will be compelled to abandon the western portion of the states. Western Kansas has had no rain to speak of for the past two or three years, and is now described as a desolate and arid region that irrigation alone can render productive, while in some portions of Nebraska the destitution has been so great that the more prosperous portions have had to be appealed to for aid. 21O+e To aveid the rush, we would advise all who want bargains in toys, crockery and groceries to call as ear'yas possible at R.
