home section and congregation believe
that Earl Lockerby has done his duty
in putting down his name as a vol-
unteer for difficult and dangerous
tasks connected with the Bicycle
Corps or despatch carriers of the
army. In this action you have not
only honoured yourself and your
family, but also the section from
which you come. We want you to
feel our sympathy and support in this
time of parting with your family and
friends. We want you to believe that
we appreciate your action. Your
mission from army to army, from
commander to commander will doubt-
less require great courage, tact and
perseverance. We believe' you pos-

Fighting in Trenches Described by
French Officer.
Pen pictures of life in the trenches
are given in extracts from two letters,
one from a lieutenant commanding an
France, the other from a private serv
ing in the East, and published in the
Figaro. The first letter says:
“We have taken up our ground hog
life once more. It is not gay. but in
this work we suffer less losses than
when marching ahead, although we
are at the mercy of some chance can-
like this happened: I was sleeping in
one trench whensa great picrite shell
fell about four yards from me, shat-
tering the trench and burying both
'under heaps of earth. We lay there
for a few moments, for other shells
were dropping. Each time that I heard
one whistling in the air I said to my-
self, 'This is the end.” Finally all emo-
tion wore off. We were covered with
earth and muck and half smothered
by the intolerable odor of the picrite

For twelve days I have not taken off
my clothing nor been able to wash.
Each company is completely separat-
ed from the others, and it is impos-
sible for the onlcers to communicate
with each other. I only receive orders
after nlghtfall and before the dawn.
Despite the fact that the battlefield
is full of combatants, with the in-
ability to see and look around, comes
axseiisation of vacancy and isolation.
We are far- from the liaiid to hand
fighting of other wars.

spect my sections of the first line and
to see what is going on. In the day-
time, it is extremely dangerous to
walk about, for the Germans hold
walls that have been pierced with
loopholes. through which they watch
-SERl0US.ACCiDENT.- A severe
accident happened to Mr. William
._Craig. Summerside, on Sunday even-
ing. While going-down a flight of
jstairs, he stumbled and fell- headlong
_to the bottom, his shoulder _getting
.such a blow that _his arm is _rendered
_useless besides a. few- bruises `ii'nd'cuts
on ,his head and facet It will be a
considerable time before Mr. Craig
will be able to leave his bed.-H.
-SPLENDID WORK- The ladies
of the Red Cross Society of Tlgnish de-
cided at their last meeting to suspend
work* during the Christmas holidays
and made their last shipment Thurs-
day consisting of 170 pairs socks, 149
pairs mitts; 4 mufllers 22 pairs wrist-
lets 4, Balaclara caps. This last ship-
ment making five cases in all speaks
well for the ladies of this Auxiliary
much credit is due the President Mrs.
A. J. McFadyen, also the Treasurer
_Mrs. Charles Dalton who did so much
towards its success.
-AGED RESiDENT DEAD.-Mr
Alexander Melielvic died at the home
of Mr Johnston, Malpeque. aged 90
years. after an illness of some months
which confined him to his bed. De-
ceased gentleman retired from farm-
ing about twelve years ago, and leaves
to mourn their loss three brothers, it
sister and _sorrowing wife, but no
family. A' large number of friend
gathered at the church to attend the
funeral on Saturday. The pull-
bearars were Chas. McDonald. Ernest
McKelvle, Alex. Sinclair, Major Tay-
lor. Fred Lockerby and W. ll. Crozier.
The late Mr McKelvie was a true
Christian man, deeds of kindness be-
ing his chief business. His advice
was largely sought, especially in his

_ “Arrived in the daytime, we at once
_set about entrenching, my section
across a ravine. The enemy’s infan-
try approached as soon as night fell,
and the cannonade started. to con-
tliiue ceaselessly. Our company was
first, the other companies being in
reserve in woods further to the rear,
also under the German fire. Our
guns were there, too. and they opened
on the German advance.
"After blazing away all night we
found ourselves alone; thc troops on
our rfglit and left had retreated.
With three battalions opposed to us
_it was thought time to get out, sec-
tion by section. Dut before wc went
half of my section, in which l was,
with another section, made a counter
attack, rushing up to a slight rise and.
opening fire. Here wo stayed until
the-enemy’s rifles and the spray ni’
his machine guns made the place uu-
tenahle. We fell back. but our cou -
ter-attack had made the Germaiih
WDW. and they did not at once pursue.
"we had to raii back over a plain
which was swept by the big German
shells, the hugeprolectiles which bury
themselves ten feet underground when
they fall, then explode, throwing huge
masses of earth into the air and tear-
ing out holes twenty-five feet in dia-
meter. We buried seven horses in
one of these holes.
“We passed through this fire with-
out much loss and arrived at the
woods, where we found the rest of
the battalion. As soon ns we got
there we set to work entrenchlng
again. Each time a whistling was
‘hmfd UD would go a cry, “Here comes
another shell!" and we would throw
ourselves down fiat, our knepsacks
over our heads; As soon as it passed,
back to work again until the next one.
We finished the day that way, then
stayed there all night and the follow-
ing day and night.”
