TOO MUCH ARITHMETIC. `
The very prominent place given ti
arithmetic in the public school progsam
is awakening serious misgivings in the
minds of thoughtful educationists. In the
words of some teachers, “the cream of the
day” is devoted to instruction in this
branch, and it might be added that the
cream, or bloom, of the lives of many of
our children is being thoughtlessly
sacrideed at the same exacting shrine.
For the average child has an intense
thirst for knowledge before entering
school, and should be met with such eon-
.ditionsaswili satisfy his longing < to in
vestigate the ample field attractiugjiis at-
tention in eveiydiiection. This is t__Ione to
a very limited extent only, brt instead _
constant appeals are made to duiinant
‘ faculties with the result that apositive
distaste torschool and study is engendered,
to the lasting injuiy of the after-life of
the pupil. This wi‘l explain much of
what is called dulluess. so prevalent
influence of examinations. In this way
it has come to pass that about nine~teuths
of the student-world are working to pass
examinations, and think _ of original in-_
vestigation and research only after they <
vantage ground.
Is this to the credit of our vaunted
school system il Must our methods of in-
struction be so divorced fiom the ti ue
philosophy of education as to blight and
dwarf instead of to develop 2 Is it not
possible for the thoughtful teacher to
direct his pupils as investigators and ex-
perimenters even in the teaching ' of
reading, writing, drawing and spelling?
It certainly is possible and not at ;all{nn-
common, But this method is not ap-
plicable to juniors when the abstract idea
of number is under consideration. A
hiirher degree of mental developent be
comes necessary, for memory_ work is
reallv as much out of place in arithmetic
as in algebra and Euceid.
But our schools do not exist for the pur-
pose of making arithmeticiaus, to the
neglect of more important object.They are
supposed to be instituted mainly for the
pui-pose of preparing the youth of this
country for the principal industrial pur-
suits of life in which az ithuietic cuts but
a very small figure. The former has to do
with Nature rather than number, while
our schools have to do withnumber rather
than nature. Surely there is a misdt here.
Cazrthere be any wisdom in educating
young men away from their life’s work?
A general education is desirable-why
notmake our course of instruction ii
little more general and less specific in the
line of arithmetic. Neither the cultural
nor practical value of the subject will
wai rant any such prominence as it has
mysteriously obtained in our course of
study-a. prominence without a parallel
in any other part of the world.
The apologists for this undue attention
to arithmetic say that isinecessaiy in order
to make pupils thorough in the subject.
but this is what they do not do. The
over anxiety to begin the subject defeats
the very object in view, and justifies the
frequent complaint that the large propor-
