increase was shown in traders and
investors weighted index numbers
of security prices for the 'week
ending Aug. 10, as computed by the
Dominion Bureau of Statistics on
the base 1926 equals 100.
The index of industrial common
stocks was '98.9 as compared with
96.7 for the previous week.
The index of prices of the 25
beat selling industrial and public
utility common stocks on the
Montreal and Toronto exchanges
was 1158.0 as compared with 1082.0.
The index of domestic utility
common stocks was 47,8 as com-
pared with 47.1.
The index of common stocks of
companies located abroad in which
Canadians are heavily interested
was 65.6 as compared with 65.4.
The index for all three groups
of common stocks combined was
72.1 as compared with 71.2.
Average weekly prices were high-
er for 14, unchanged for three and
lower for eight of the 25 stocks in-
cluded in the traders' index. Walk-
ers rose from $38.5 to $44.60, In-
temational Nickel from $19.4 to
$20.3, Canadian Industrial Alcohol
“A” from $18.2 to $19.0, Standard

Press this morning the Prime Min-
lsteer said there was the keenest
desire to replace the present tem-
porary trade agreement between
Canada and New Zealand with a
pact extending over a longer term,
and to, increase trade between the
two countries.

a. satisfactory adjustment of points

ercised more than ordinary care and
good judgment when driving his
car. He was physically fit in every
way. `
Engineers Testimony
Harry Stems, engineer of train
No. 41 of Charlottetown, gave avid-
ence that his train was fifteen min-
utes late leaving Albany ov the day
in question. The accident occurred
at 455. Was running train at about
25 miles an hour. There is no
specific speed for a train when ap-
proaching the station. First and
second class trains have right of
way. At Dlckie‘s crossing which is
1 .short distance from Borden, the
train blows four times, coming into
Borden she blows once. Dickies
crossing is a. quarter of a mile from
Borden, you can see track clear to
Borden. The bell was rung as they
approached Nocnan’s crossing.
Trainmen do not look upon this as
a. regular crossing. but as a farmer's 4
crossing. It is not considered a
highway.
Mr. Stems said that he first saw
the car when she came from behind
the box cars on the .right cf track.
I was right on him then; 1 applied
my emergency brake at once. We
stopped within the length of train;
which was made up of seven cars; '
we went the length of 6% cars. The ,
weight of train was approximatelyl
313 tons, fairly heavy train.
Asked by the Coroner if he con-i
sidered this crossing properly pro-i
tected, Mr. Sterns replied: "lt is not ‘
looked upon as a proper crossing."
Asked whether he could have
seen the car sooner if the box cars
had not been there, witness replied

A large congregation worshipped
yesterday morning in the Kirk, in-
cluding many vls'tors to the Prov-
ince. The service was conducted by
the minister, Rev. Moorhead Le-
gate, D. D., who took for his text

how ye hear." Dr. Legate painted
out that Jesus Christ had said
much more about how the gospel
should be heard than about how
it should be preached, and showed
that intelligent, concentrated and
expectant hearing meant an
ingathering of the wealth of
peace and comfort and strength to
the heater. The devotional part of
the service was much enriched by
the fine rendering of the solos
"Hearken unto my voice” and “In
My Fathe1"s House" by Mr. Victor
E. Pyke of Toronto, accompanied
by Mrs. Keith Rogers on the organ.
The processional psalm was "How
Lovely are Thy dwellings fair,”'
and the recessional hymn "O GodI
of Bethel."
THE SALVATION ARMY
At li o’clcck the Holiness meeting
was held, Mrs. Adj. Stevens giving a
helpful talk. `
After Sunday School at 3, the
Band held an hour's open air ser-
vice on Rockford Square.
At the evening service Adi. Stev-
ens took as his text, "Behold a leper
who came and worshipped." ‘
Hia leprosy did not prevent him
coming to worship Jesus.
Heathen worshippers can teach
Christians a lesson in z_ea.l and de-
votion.

Jesus. He may find in Him Sal-
vation and freedom from sin. If

ly looked upon as a farmers’ cross-
ing. Thcre is no sign on the rail-I
way to indicate that it is a crossing.
There are five tracks there before
the main line track is reached, on
which train No. 41 was travelling.
The switch engine was running near
the station at the time."

Ernest Macharen, conductor of
the train also gave evidence which
corroborated with the previous wit-
nesses. He had no womirlg of any-
thing wrong until he felt the emer-
gency brake go on. ~
Ha got out and found a woman
lying on the track. She was suffer-
ing.. He then saw a man in the
ditch and went over to him. The
man was in great pain. He gave
him his name. Witness then went
over to the wrecked car and found
no one in it. Everything possible
was done for the comfort of the in-
jured man and his wife.
Charles W. MacArthur, of thc
Mounted Police said he had invest-
igated the scene of the accident.
The road was 45 feet wide. The
width nf the road between. the last
box car and where the lcft wheel of I
the automobile would be in the road
was three feet; or three feet from
highway. There were 30 box cars
on that side. He considered it un-
wise and unjust to raiiwaymen to
have box cars so near the highway.
He was called to the accident by
Donald McLure. He livcd about 300
yards from the crossing,- did not
hear the train coming that day,
but do not pay much attention to
the train. He ordered the injured
man and woman to he taken to
Summerside. Tile car was right in
front of the engine. when hc saw it.
There are seven residences down
past Noonan’s crossing and it ls
used every day. There are bushes
that obstruct the view as well as
the cars. A driver of an automobile
could not see the track even if he
stopped. I-le would have to get out
of his car and go round the corner
to see. It was only 8 feet from the
bpmper of the last box car to the
wheel mark ol' the automobile.
` Mrs. Wm. Milligan, of Borden,
gave evidence that she and others
were bathing at Noonans beach.
Returning the O'Grady's were driv-
ing ahead of them, going about 15
miles an hour. Witness saw the ac-
cident, but when she came to the
track, saw the car on the engine.
She went over to Mrs. O'Grady and
remained with her.
Mrs. Raymond Stull, Borden, tcst-
ified that she was conversing with

When driving to this crossing, she
watched for smoke of train, as that
is about all the indication one has|
of the train coming. Ono cannot
always hear it blow. She did not
like the crossing for those reasons.
The beach is very poptiur, but most
people walk to it.
Rev. W. E. Monaghan, of Seven
Mile Bay, stated that he was called
to the scene of the accident, He
considered the crossing exception-
ally dangerous and said repeated ef-
forts have been made to have some-
thing done. Officials cf the Gov-
erru-nent have viewed the situation
and their report was sent to the C.
N. R.. office at Moncton in 1932, but
no action was taken. Previous to
that occasion, witness stated efforts
were made to have the road closed
and a road made direct to Borden
station. The danger of the crossing
was emphasized in the request. The
road is used extensively as a road
to the shore for farmers to halul
scawecd and as a winter road to
Bedeque. since nine houses have
bccn built there it has been looked
upon as a public road.
Dr. McPhee and Dr. Sinlpson gave
evidence that they were called to the
scene and attended the deceased in
the Prince County Hospital. Death
was due to general injuries and tok
shock. The patient died between
4.30 and 5 o'clock on Friday mom-
ing.
