To “begin as you can hold out” is an | old adage often repeated for the benefit of the young wile; it may be dwelt upon by the young housekeeper at least with profit. One thing I never would ‘begin with is a copper tea kettle. I would never have the memory of that once bright but constantly dimming tea kettle haunting me; that is one bitter ex- perience which may be so easily avoid ed. When there are only two members of the family and acompetent girl in the kitchen the kettle may bekept bright, andthat too without great danger of the family drinking verdigris in their tea: but when the children come, and | the mother’s room is’ further re moved trom the kitchen, and her watch ful care must be exercised over and kettles, the pleasure of having copper tea kettle is greatly diminished, as it seems to be no longer possible for its good loocks to be preserved. A good tin tea kettle, of melon size, may be kept clean and bright at all times with little effort ;and the time and thought that must be given during an ordinarily long life to the copper vessel would easily be nsed to better advantage. A thoughtful woman who wishes well to all womankind, and who appreciates the beauty as well as the necessity of doing faithfully and with thought every humble duty that is owed to the home, is still sometimes appaled when the conviction is forced upon ber that the great mass of women think of uoth- ing else. She feels with pain and a great sense of joss, that the brains of most women instead of being evenly | developed are necessarily the reverse. Who does not know, aod esteem, and pity some woman of her acquaintance who retiresfrom school with a scanty equipmentinthe way of arithmetic, grammer, and spelling, and who after that never opens a book, unless perhaps some light novel; who skims through the morning paper, noting possibly the last murder, but nothing more! It seems as if even these women might be awakened to something better, might be made to appreciate the meaning which others give to life, and might become interested in pursuits which give plea-: sure lasting long after the copper tea kettle has been scoured into oblivion. —_— Es Oe Distilling Attar of Roses. THE ROSE FARM [N INDIA WHERE THE PLANTERS GET $100 AN OUNCE FOR THEIR PRODUCT. “Genuine attar of roses,” remarked a New York chemist, “which is made in India and Australia, costs $100 an ounce at the place of distillation. It takes 50,000 rose blooms to yield an cunce of attar. They are the common roses, and grew in great profusion in California, where the distillaton of at- tar could be made a very profitable in- dustry, Ihave seen hedge rows near Samona, in that State, so dense with these reses that the odor from them on a warm, sultry day, caused a feeling of peculiar faintness and oppression in the passer by. Thisis the effect of the attar that is distilled by the heat and moist air, and is held suspended, as it were, in the atmosphere. “There is money in that cause of faintness and indolence, but in this country not only the sweetness, but the great value of the flowers, is wasted on the desert air. In northern India the roses are regularly cultivated. They are planted in rowsin fields, and re- quire no particular care. When they begin to bloom they are picked betore mid-day. The work is done by women aud children, whoseem to regard it more us a pleasure than a pursuit of labor. The rose leaves are distilled in twice their weght of water, which is drawn off into open vessels. These are | allowed to stand over night, being | covered up with cloths to keep out dirt In the morning the water is coated with a thin oily film. This is the rare attar ofrose. It is skimmed off with a fine feather and dropped into vials, The process continues daily uo- til the bushes cease to bloom. So it may well be imagined that any essence or oil that requires the distilling of 50,000 roses to fill an ounce vial has & right to have a good price set upon it. -_———— ee A Rich Man. William King a very rich London merchant, who loved life, adopted a curious scheme to longthen the period of his declining days. He willed $1,000 to his physician, with the proviso that the sum should be doubled every year that the testator should be kept alive. The second year the sum became 82, 000; the third, $4,000; tho fourth, $8,000; the fitth $16,000; the sixth, $32,000; the seventh; 864,000; the eighth, $128,000; the ninth, $256,000; the tenth, $512,000. Upon the death of Mr. King, a few weeks ago, the pbysi- cian was paid $750,000, between ten and eleven years having passed sinco theagreement. ee Special Notices.
