Mr. McKay died on Sun-, day evening at 7 o’clpck. The deceased had attained the ripe age of 69 years.- He was a consistent member of the Pres- byterian church' and held the respect of the whole community. In his death Stan- _ ley loses one of its best residents, and his ' sorrowing wife four sons aud_ two daugh- ters lose a kind husband and father. One of his daughters who resided in Boston, reached home _Saturday evening in re- sponse 'to a telegram stating that her father was sinking rapidly. EASTERN Norns:-While the western and middle portions of the Island experi- enced one of the worst snow-storms of the winter, stopping trains, blocking roads and impeding travel on the 7th inst, the ` east was visited by one of the worst rain- storms of an ,exceedingly rainy winter. It is certainly a season of contradictions’ as contrary conditions prevailed here other springs. _ The snow'-storm of the lst inst, the only one of winter, still renders travelling nearly impossible and _ makes roads, nat1:r,tlly bad at this season, much worse than usual, in fact the worst roads ever known for such a length of period. As-a proof of the peculiar-season Frank Mossy killed four snakes on the 11 inst.-Considerable drift ice has again appeared on _our coasts and though of a lighter character than of other years, its induence will be felt in the weather.-A stir between. lobsteli hctories and cheese factories is the prin- cipal business here now.-Some of our* young men are going to Sydney to take advantage of the present boom there.- Our cod-fishermen find it hard to *hire men this year as the old style fishermen of other days are getting scarce. The ap- pointment is one peculiarly appropriate,as Nova Scotia was the first Colonial diocese established.
