He swam some di-tance out, but was rescued by his brother and two residents of the neighborhood, who pnt otf in boats and overtook him before he became tired out. Power’s act was probably inspired by Datch courage. He was taken ashore near his home and look- ed after and soon recovered. Quite a large crowd gathered on the shore and watched the proceedings. - - Parocniat Fatre.—A grand Parochial Prof. Cushing, of Boston, gave a valuable sddress on the subject of hvsteriotomy. John Lodge = ae MeCLUKE’S MAGAZINE FOR JULY. Whoever cares te know how Rudyard Kipling composes one of bis spirited bar- rack-room batiads will be im‘erested in the opening paper in McClure’s Magazine for July. Written by Mr. E. Kay Robinson with whom Kipling was intimately asso- ciated in the editorship of a newspaper in India, the paperis full of interesting per- sonal facts about Kipling. But perhaps surpassing this in abundance of new per sonal detail is a paper of recollections of Longfe!low, Whittier and Holmes, by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. Whittier, it appears, while never lacking for allec- tionate care, and never losing his cbeerful tone, was, in his last vears, much op- pressed ty loneliness, and Holmes, while outwardly so merry a man, was at heart grave almost to melancholy. In his later years the latter experienced, too, qnite a radical change in his religious views. Both papers are fally iilustrated with por- traits and other pictures ; and, forming an independent article, is a comprehensive series of portraits of Longfellow. A woman’s account of her own experi- ence in climbing to the very top of the Matterhorn—a feat which few women have proved eqnal to; an illust:ated article by Cleveland Moffett, indicating the revolu- tion that isalready beginning to be wrought in travel, traffic and war by the horseless carriage; a paper of reminiscences and anecdotes from personal associates of Abraham Lincoln at the bar, showing Lincoln’s life and methods asa lawyer; and a paper by Mr. Will H. Lowon the present state of printing in Germany, with reproductions of recent celebrated German paintings—are other noteworthy features of this num r of McCiure’s. |The Hon. Gardiner G. Hubbard, president of the American Geographical Society, writes of the growth of the English power in Africa, showing how largely it has come to exceed that of any other nation, Then, there are several good storie: —oue of tne mad mid- night ride or a pretty, young wheelwoman, disguised in her brother’s bicycle suit. ——o- + —— Tue Rive —The Charlottetown Engin- eers will bold the first of their annuat spoon competitions at Kensington Range to-morrow afternoon, at 4 o’clock. — The Cocenthaler gold medal will be shot for to-morrow afternoon in conjunc - tion with the Engineers’ spoon competi- tion. _—-_—-— Monz Coat.
