T, W. Goodwill, Moderator. James Livingston. For Elders Hugh J. McLean. For Trustees. Clyde River, April 13th, i941. RENOVATION REQUIRES MUCH . CARE Before going too far in altera- tions to an old house, it. is wise to examine carefully its structre to make sure that it is in sound con- dition, Otherwise when the work of re-zirranging the interior layout gets well under way so much un- foreseen work will have to be done that the cost will amount alarm- ingly. The first place to lcok for decay is in the sills that rest on the foundations. 1f they are sound, it is safe to assui-ne that the balance of the frame is sound. when you are reasonably satis- fied that there is little danger from this source look at the outside trim where it comes near theearth and around the eaves, particularly where the gutters and downspouts are located. Sometimes when gutters have been kept clean or they have rotted the concentration of water on iso- lated parts of the trim will cause it to rot. too. If this rotting has been allowed to go too far, it may have pene- trated even to the frame. Needless to say. all rotten wzcd should be removed and replaced to prevent the spread‘ of the rotting. Another point of danger is in the chimney. This should be carefully examined to see that there are no cracks or open paints or loose bricks. 1f there are any indications of weaknesses, the chimney shruld be rebuilt, and in rebuilding it would be well t.o install flue linings. The roof is another place to look for poSsibIc deterioration. Wood shingles will not last forever, slats and tile and composition shingles may have broken lcose. or pa-per or felt shingles may have reached the point where they must be replaced. lic musical westerns. is scheduled to! open today at. _the Capitol Theatre. | Fashioned with the usual robust ingenuity of all Autry plots. it has to do with the tribulations of Gene as a youthful rancher in a valley, facing flood devastation unless i'e-, forcstation is ridopied by the Went- worth Lumber Company. j Unable to make much headwayi with the lumber camp foreman,‘ Gene and his pal. They keep hLrn from broodin' about beiii' a dog". Nevertheless, fleas may present a serious problem if there are dogs or cats in the home. They have a tendency to quit their hosts from time to time, becoming abundant in rugs and furniture. in cracks. in floors and in basements. Only the adult fleas bite. Their bites cause serious annoyance and pain. Fleas undergo a complete meta- morphosis during their life span. The young are worm-like creatures and if seen are rarely recognized as a stage in the life cycle of fleas. The eggs, white and relatively large are disposed on the back of one animal host, in bedding or in dust or dirt, in cracks in the floor. Hem the egg a small, white worm dike larvac emerges t0 food on lint, dried blood and shed animal hairs and grow to about. one-fourth oi an inch long within a period of one to five weeks. The full-grown larva forms a small oval cocoon and from that state passes to adult- hood. A generation of fleas require from two to three weeks to as many months to mature, varying with the conditions. For this reason, houses closetffor some time have been found overrun on the return of the occupants after a lengthy absence. Control of fleas calls for pronip’. attention to both animals and the infested premises. Spray kennels AWL UNCHES Was It iiiontelli? Served.
