The result of the Provincial Grade X examinations are out. some people thought that. in view of the aplritsd oontrovsrsy on educational matters last win- ter, the requirements for passing into Grade XI might be made a bit stiller. but this raising ol the bars did not materialize. if any- thing, the hurdle may have been lowered a little as approximately 7096 of the students writing were successful. and this, we believe, is higher than the percentage in former years. - s o in recent years the system of publishing the names of aucceas- fiil candidate: has been changed aornewhat. Formerly each pupil's name appeared in the order of rank and total marks were ap- pended. Now the pupils are grouped in three divisions and listed alphabetically. The ayatem conforms pretty well to the way such lists are published in uni- versitiea. The peculiarity of the island method is that the names at the pupils who come first in separate subjects are published. while the student who amassed the highest aggregate is kept a secret. Surely this pupil who shows an all-round excellence de- serves recognition more than the others. . . . When we come to the handling of Grade Xl examination results, an abrupt change is noted. Those who make the highest percentage in individual subjects are now ignored. and the highest live on the Island are listed in order of merit. We think this system is an improvement over the one used for Grade X. if we are trying to do away with the idea of pupils competing against each other, then we are not going far enough. The ranking of pupils is still present, and It is now sometimes misleading. We know ii boy who made 598 in this year's Grade X exams. This is just two marks away from the first class. but his name is listed in alpha- betlcal order in the second class. He might be at the bottom of that class for all anyone could tell. The old system at publish- ing each aggregate in order is superior to this. llodds - Randall ' Wedding A quiet pretty wedding was solemnized at the George Street Baptist Parsonage, Fredericton.
