Eventually places are found them all, places of rela- tive security, but their belongings 0f all kinds are destroyed. The task o! emergency feeding alone is difficult. The task of setting them up once more with some quantity of clothing and beddi is much more difficult. To meet ese enor- mous and, alas, fast growing needs funds have been started in various parts of the world. “Some months ago Mayor Queen Zens of Winnipeg to give something for this purpose. The results have been good. About the same time the Toronto Telegram started a fund in that city which has also done good work. Now, thanks to the initiative of Mr. John G. Mc- Connell, publisher of the Montreal Standard, newspapers right across Canada are sponsoring and endors- ing this campaign for funds. There L! hardly l, large city in Canada where, one way or another, form- al appeals for British air raid vic- tims are not, being made. Here in Winnipeg, rather than disturb the existing channel of contributions, the newspapers have stood aside in favor of Mayor Queen's fund. As the mayor himself has said, the channel is unimportant: the big thing is to get the money. And in- tending contributors here can, if they wish, send their contributions either to the mayor or to any branch _ of the Royal Trust Company, which will forward them to headquarters Her Majesty's Sympathy “The importance of the effort the weight that is attached to it. is shown by the fact that Her Maj- esty, Queen Elizabeth, has per- mitted the use of her name in con- nection with the Dominion cam- paign, which is officially known as “The Queen's Canadian Fund for Air Raid Victims." l-ler Majesty's sympathy for the stricken is fa- miliar to everyone across tile world; the photographs of that charming lady doing what she can to alle- viate suffering and distress are known to us all. _‘ smashed areas, inspecting the ar- rangements made for the victims, offering whatever practical help and sympathy they can to their subjects, all of whom. as His Majesty has said, are in the front line, The scenes in that front line will crow much worse beforc they will get any better. Hard days of endless anguish lie ahead. To give those people the assurance that, from our security on this side of the Atlan- tic, we are doing somctlting to help will be a substantial tokctt of com- radeship that will play 11‘.s part in the all-important maintenance of morale. An extract from a, letter by a Manchester woman tells wme. thing of the need: "It was pitiful to see the people PressAppeals For Queenie Fund Notable Editorials by Leading Daily Papers Two outstanding editorials lu support of the Queen's Ouudlan Fund Tile following is from the Winnipeg Free Press:- “These are n. few of the tragic ha" nlngs that were heart-break- ing.
