Ottawa became impressed with the possibility of developing a -bent grass industry for island farmers. 'l‘he sir-called "ntaturalgrass" wid- ely prevalent throughout. the pro- vince appeared to ‘comprise the valuable bent grasses which are in great demand for golf courses, bowling greens, and lawns in Canada and the northern part of the United States. Mr. Clark com- pared notes with Dr. M. 0. Matte, formerly Dominion A51 stologist. and tin-y agreed ‘that the \bent grass seed of Prince Edward is- lanii might replace in the market tho German Mixed ~Bent and the Colonial Bent from New Zealuizid. The Dominion seed inspector. Gordon MacMillan, North River, was accordingly instructed to in- terest island farmers in harvesting seed from the "Brown Top" or “Fly-away" grass, and efforts were made tu develop ‘a market. The seed trade responded quite readily, because the German iicnt was practically oll the market owing to the grass lands of Ger- many being brought under cultiva- iinn during the war. and the New ztralnmi Bent is usually very high in price. inspector MacMiilan visited sev- eral farnierg last season but they were generally dubious of this new SHERIFF SALE BY ViIRTTJiE OF‘ A WRIT (TF7 STINDUTE EXECUTION t0 me dir- ected lssued out of Ills Majesty's‘ Supl-Rme Court of Judicature at the suit of Peter J. Ar- nangements may be made with him for field inspection and in- formation as to harvesting thresh- ing and cleaning. What is Bent Grass of BIO Rhode There are several species bent grass, most of which difficult, to distinguish. Island bent is identical with tho Colonial Bent or Brown Top of New Zealand and has been collect- ed in Prince Edward island by Dr. Malte, Chief Botanlst, National Herbarium, Ottawa. Socallcd creeping bent Ls the favourite grass for putting greens on golf courses, and is probably prevalent on the island. Redtop is the most valuable species of hont for hay and pas- ture, particularly on moist soils, ,and has been sown in Prince Edward island meadow mixtures. The other grasses mentioned occur apparently as natural or native golf courses. howling greens and lawns in northern ilatitudcs. They make very desirable turf which will stand close clipping throughout the season. and have the necessary llBTlllIllili/g to come through tho winters, in good condition. 'l‘lic different species of bent grass will cross naturally as they are open or wind-pollinhted plants. There may consequently be many intermediate forms, and in case oi’ mixture or inter-breeding the seed would have -to be sold as Mixed Bent. Dr. Malta will probably visit the island in August -to make b1 spec- ial investigation of the bent grass- us. He, is the Canadian authority on thIS subject and will identify the difficult samples which may he re- ferred to him by inspector Gordon MacMillan, North River. Farmers with promising fields of "nlatural grass" should send a few of the flowering plants to Mr. MacMlllan. Harvesting Seed of Bent Gran The "Brown Top" grows well on soil that has not had lime or mussel mud for several years. It replaces the clover» and timothy as they die in old muadowa from cutting and pa-sturing. The seed ripcns the latter part of August or early in September. according to the season. Norman Montgomery, Lower Bodeque, pastured one of his fields with young cattle till September, then cut. what was left for seed. The other field pastured horses during July and gtave the moat and best seed. The horses no doubt fed on the bottom grass and did not materially damage the seed crop. The first field Wliq cut with a mower. let lie for a few days, and thon thrashed. The second field was cut with a binder laud stocked for two weeks. Threshing was done with the ordinary machine with all the wind shut off. The seed was stored in the chaff and cleaned In the winter with hand sieves and a slight draft of wind. Great dare should be taken in selecting fields of true Brown Top, free from weeds with seed; that mght be a pest in golf courses, bowling greens, or lawns.
