Lord Privy Seal and minister of unemployment, in the Labor government of Great Brlv aln addressing the Trades and La- bor Congress here today. “I’ll tell you now," he stated. "that of all the proposals I have made there isnft one that will cost you a dollar. I ask no favors. All my pro- posals are to ask that these who need it be given a chance to hold up their heads. It is easy for poi- lticians to come here and tell you how good you are. From constant repetition you begin to believe that you are the only pebbles on the beach. But I’d like to point out that for every pound you spend with us you spend five pounds with other people. The train was brought to a. stop fifty yards from the stall- ed cars. The three cars had fallen 40 feet on to the tracks when a bridge three mile-s east of here col- lapsed. ' At the Summersldc. conference with Hon. P. J. Cardin. Minister of Marine and Fisheries ls-st Saturday; the following brief was presented by Mr. Chester MacCarti-ly, Tignish. manager of the Fisheries Union. L Be Cold longs. That there is urgent need for l Cold Storage Plant at Tignlsh. Aft the present time 'no fresh halt ein be stored by the Fishermen owing to the lack of cold storage facilities, and fishermen are often withoutbaii for codfishlng several days at a. time, As a result the fishermen are id!! during these days. the catch of fish is materially reduced and the profits on the catch are thereby considerab- ly lessened. The smelt fishermen Ow- ing to lack of cold storage cannot hold their fish to take advantage of favorable markets and are- obliged to ship daily during the season some- times in extremely mild weather. In consequence there is often noi only a total loss of such shipment but in addition express rates are added to the loss as weiL 2. Transportation. At Tlgnish there is no natural har- bour and no water shipping facil- ities and therefore the Railway il the sole means of transporting fish- sry products. No refrigerator cars are provided from Tlgnish Station. the lack of such often entailing serious loss to the fishermen. The Express rates on fresh fish are excessive and also make imprscticable the impor- tation of frozen bait from other Maritime ports. 3. Instructions in Methods of Cur- ing lllsh. Competent District Instructors are badly needed as the markets for cur- ed fish are very exacting in respect to quality and but prices cannot bi obtained by adhering to old methods 4. Fish Reduction Plant. In an agricultural province sucll as ours a plant of this kind would not only benefit the fishermen by ab- sorbing fish waste and enoouragln| the destruction of dogflsh and other such destructive pests but would be of great benefit to the farmers as the products could be used for both feed and fertiliser. 5.: Lobster Paste. We recommend that this by-pro- duct of the lobster be packed undef' instruction from the Fishery Depart- ment and under Government inspec- tion, with a view to securing a uni- form, or standard. pack with the ob- ject of establishing a wider and more lucrative market. I. Loans to Flsherluen. That funds might be provided through the li‘ishermen's Organisa- tions to enable individual fishermen to purchase their own fishing eqlnpgf ment: The organisation aa at ent constituted being unable ply the necessary funds and-a:s_-l consequence many good fishermen an deprived of the roll hooloiiuffll their lame. sppuootlou for niet loans could ba made through the 'oil ganiaaticu and approved by it befofi bling submitted to the Department.
