It appears from the gathered statistics of the world that women have a greater tenacity of life then men. Nature wor ships thefemales inall varieties. Among the insects the male perishes at a_ rela. tively early period. In plant the seminare blossoms die earliest, and are produced in the weaker limbs. Female quadrupeds have more endurance (ban males. Inthe human race despite the inteliectual and physical strength of the man,the women endure longest, and will bear painto which the strong mao succumbs. Zymotic diseases are more fetal to males, and more male children die than female. Deverga asserts that the proportion dying suddenly is about 100 women to 780 men; 1089 men ia the United States in 1870 committed suicide to 285 women. Intemperance, apoplexy, gout, hydrocephalus, affee- tions of the heart or liver, scrofuls, paralysis are far more fatal to males than females. Pulmonary consumption on the other hand, is more deadly to the latter. Females in cities are more prone to consumption than in the country. All old countries not distarb- ed by emigration have a majority of females in the population. In royal families the statistics show more daughters than sons. The Hebrew woman is exceptionally short lived. The married state is favorable to pro longation of life among women. Dr. fhough remarks that there are more than six per cent. excess of females iu the living populations. From which statistics we conclude that all women. who can possibly obtain one of those rapidly departing men ought to marry and as men are likely to become so very scarce, they cannnot be sufficient- ly prized by the other sex. “Twas Ever Thus!” _Let us consider facts. General Gordon is @ man who has two excellent quali- ties: 1, he despises money; 2, he de- Spises death. But if we look into his career,we find that he loves adventure, 13 ready to take survice with any bar- barian or despot who wishes to destroy the lives of other barbarians, and does not held himself, like his prototype Dalgetty, bound to make his employer's interests his own. He first came to the front in China. He entered the service ofthe emperor of China, and carried on military operations against the Taep- ings. But on what moral ground has an Englishman a right to slay Chinese at the bidding of a Chinaman? Fox all that is known to the contrary, the T'aep- ings were in the right, and the emperor in the wrong. Be this as it may, one thiog is certain, that the Taeping re- volution was suppressed with horrible cruelty. Then we hear of his taking service with the Cape Government, aod becoming its commander-in- chief in a war against the Basutos. But, having accepted this post he went over bag and baggage to the Basutos. In Egypt he accepted the governorship of the Soudan from the Khedive Ismail, and then proceeded to slay and destroy all Soudanese who would not acknowledge Ismail as their ruler. Lastly, having accepted a mis- sion toinduce the Soudanese to allow the Egyptian garrisons to withdraw peacefully from the Soudan, he has sought to convert this into a desultory campaign against the Soudunese, and has written to say that his employers will cover themselves with indelible dis- grace if they do not send him troops to shoot down Bedouins and to mash the Mahdi. As to his religion the christ- ian hero never his pretended to be a christian. To judge by his own utter. ances, he seems to be a sort of Deist, regarding his own will as that of the Deity. Iv is full time that we should poncer over the above facts. Hero- worship is all very well. In the present “ge, when love of money is so prevalent one admires a man who does not care for it, whilst personal bravery always commanuas respect. But we must not run sway with the notion that we are — to regard aman who po-sesses thes: ‘wo qualities as e being of super- patural Virtue, or to consider that black -ecomes white at his bidding. —London 7 rui.h.
