So this dreary life is passing amid its maze, ! And we grope along together, half in dark- ness half in light ; And our hearts are often hardened by the mysteries of our ways, Which are never all in shadow and never wholly bright. And our dim eyes ask a beacon and our weary feet a guide. taal And our hearts of all life’s mysteries seek the meaning and the key ; And across gleamed o’er our pathway, on it hangs the crucified And He answers all our yearnings by the whisper: ‘Follow Me.’ —Father Ryan. ci tte de i ee That Secret Socisty. The other day, after a strapping young man had sold a load of corn and potatoes on the market and had taken his team to a hotel barn to ‘feed,’ it became known to the men, around the barn that he was desirour of joining some secret society. When questioned he admitted that such was the case, and the boys at onee offered to admit him into a new order called ‘the Cavaliers of Coveo. it was twice as seerct as Free Masonry, much nicer than Odd Fellowship, and the cost was only two dollars. in case he had the toothache he could draw five dollars per week from the relief fund, and he was entitled to receive ten dollars for every head ache, and twenty-five dollars for a sore * throat. The young man thought he had struck a big thing, and after eating a hearty dinner he was taken into a store above the barn to be initiafed. The boys poured cold water down his back, put flour on his hair, sworn him to kill his mother-if commanded, and rushed him around for an hour withouta single complaint from his lips. When they finished he inquired : ‘Now I'm one of the Caveliers of Ceveo, am I?’ ‘You are,’ they all cried. ‘Nothing more to ask ?” is there ?’ ‘Nothing.’ ‘Well then, I'm going to whip the whole crowd!’ continued the candidate, and he went at it, and before he got through he had his two dollars initia- tion fee back and three more to boot, and had knocked everybody down two or three times apiece. He didn’t seem greatly disturbed in mind as he drove out of the barn. On the contrary, his hat was slanted over, he had afresh five-cent cigar in his teeth, and he mildly said to one of the barn boys: ‘Say boy,if you hear any of the Cav- aliers asking for a Coveo about my size, tell ’em I'd be in on the full of the moon to take the Loyal Skyfugle de- gvrees.— ree Press. Tho Trap-Door Spider. One of the most singular specimens of insect life is the trap-door spider of {lis burrow is lined with silk. and closel by a trap-door with a hinge The door exactly fits the entrance to the burrow, and when closed, so precisely cor- responds with the surrounding earth that it can hardly be distinguished, even when its position is knowo. Itis a strange sight to see the earth open,a little lid raised, some hairy legs protrude and gra- dually the whole form of the spider show itself. The spiders generally hunt for food by night, aud ia the daytime they ure-very chary of opening the door of their domicile, and if the trap be raised from the outside, they run to the spot, hitch the claws of their fore feet into the lining of the burrow, and so resist with all their might. The strength of the spider is wonderfully great in proportion to its size. ee ee ke Frederick Eckert of Baltimore an- nounced his belief that there ought to be seven Books of Moses instead of five and it is probable that, if glib-tongued and persuasive, he might have made! Hear what a Reverend Gentleman says of the Constitutional Rew.edy. T. J. B. Harprse,- Esq., Brockville, Onts:—:. DEAR Six—It is now two years since your “Constitutional Catarrh Remedy ’ was intre- duced to me. I have waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the effects seemed to me to be ‘‘too good te true.” I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Oireular I saw my case described in many par- ticulars, The inward “drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking. sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be com to sit up in the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles, Before I had used a quarter o the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third. I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head. A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave te make what use of it yon may see proper, Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister. Port Elgin, Ont., Aug. 24, 1878. Ask for Littlefield’s Constitutional Catarrh Remedy and take no other. : T. J. B. Harprye, Dominion, Agent, Brock- ville, Ont.
