mm cee eae Ne T A Ain ——— ee DAILY tii i HE XAMINER. TUESDAY, JULY 26 i892 A Sensible Wife. There lived not very far from here A farmer and his wife, A comfortable, happy pair, With but one cause for strife. The farmer was a jolly soul Who dearly loved a drop, But, as he shamefully confessed, He **Knew not when to stop.” And yet he would not sign the pledge His anxious wife to please; It would kill him all at once to stop— He'd *‘do it by degrees.” ‘You'll get drunk once too often, Sam, And, mark my words! some night You'll fall iato the garden well, And serve you exactly right.” Sam laaghed, but ere two days had passed The warning words came trne; He tumbled headlong down the well, That bruised him black and blue. Into the bucket clambered he, Then yelled with a!l his might, : For, drenched and shivering, he'd no mind To sit there all the night. The good wife heard his cries for help, She knew well where to go; And, leaning o’er the edge, she cried : **Didn’t I tell you so?” **Don’t stop to preach,” said master Sam, **But wind me to the top; I was not drank when I fell in— I only had a drop. ‘‘Always the same old tale,” thought Jane, Then bravely set to work, And half-way wound the bucket up When back it slipped with a jerk. Twice this happened, then poor Sam Suspected its trick; “Wife, wife,” he cried, “‘Whatdo you mean, I'll drown if you're not quick.” **Have patience, love,” said Mrs. Jane, **I'm sure you're hard to please. Like you, harsh measures 1 despise— Your rising by degrees.” The shivering wretch was sober now, And cried : “If to the edge You brivg me safely, this time, Jane, I vow I'll sign the pledge.” With might and main she tugged and pulled, And wound him to the brink; Sie there and then produced a card That made him swear off drink. And Sam has kept the pledge, and now Feels happy and secure. He often tells his wife, ‘‘Mine waa A genuine water cure !” —_—_————XXXaXaK_ Ferry Boat Time Table. Accept the truth, even thougk it hurts you. People never mean it when they say they don't care how they look. The girl who cells all her troubles to her mother is soonest rid of them. We all make the mistake of believing other people are not as smart as we are. Boil sympathy down and you will find the tears and sighs will evaporate and leave nothing but curiosity. Tt is bad eno to stand the ridicule you deserve and cannot avoid ; don’t do fovlish things you can avoid. Surrendering at Discretion. “Tommy, how did you get the back of your neck all sunburnt ?” **Pullin’ weeds in the garden.” “But your hair is all wet my son.” **That’s persp' ration.” “Your vest is on wrong side out, too,” “Put it on that way a-purpose.” *‘And how does it happen, Tommy, dear, that you have got Jakey Du Rois’ trousers on,”’ (After a long pause). ‘Mother, I cannot telia lie. I've been a-swimming.” Te Gain the public confidence is essential to business success, and it can only be gained by a steady course of faithful dealing with them. It is by this course that Messrs. Tuckett & Son have secured the great success of their ‘‘Myrtle Navy” tobacco. This con- fidence is not only a source of business to the firm, but also a source of economy which the consumers get the benefit of. The merchant never loses & moment of time in examining the quality of the tobacco. The name fixes the quality as absolutely as the mint stamp fixes the value of the guinea. It is not even necessary for the commercial traveller's trunk to be burdened with a sample of ‘Myrtle Navy.” All his customers know what it is, and know ia an instant when it has been supplied. There isno room fer any dispute shout it. No waste of time or postage in writing complaints about it. These may look lock like trifles to the uninitiated, but they save money, and enable merchants to perform the work of distributior at the smallest possible cost. They are part of the reasons why the finest quality ef tobacco grown can be sold at so cheap a price, a -_——~e- o—________.
