But that's not the reaction of Mr. G. H. King. a born and bred Barhadian. for Mr. King. as See- retary oi the Barbados Fancy Molasses Company Limited. sees beyond the palm trees and the sunny beaches to the thousands of acres of sugar cane from Villlch . comes the bulk oi Canada”s and America's golden table molasses. Although many folks don't real- ise it. the island of Barbados, said Mr. King in an interview recently, is one of the most high- ly agriciilturally developed lands in the Western Hemisphere. Of its total land area of 106,470 acres. almost 9096 - 94.346 acres is de- voted to crops or pasture. And sugar cane accounts for almost l0"t. of that figure. Apart from the izranulated sugar. the major part of this tre- mendous annual sugar cane crop goes into the making of molasses - particularly of the Fancy Table variety which is sold almost all over the world, and is recognized as the premier product of its love. Much of the credit for this de- served renown must go to the Company of which Mr. King is Secretary, for it comprises the major exporters of this delicious commodity. banded together to ansure consistent quality and im- proved distribution. And it is in the llald of distribution that the most outstanding advance has been made in the Molasses indus- try . . . For many years. Mr. King explained. the traditional method of marketing molasses was via shipping in wooden punch- sons and barrels. As these be- came more expensive to produce. and because of their bulk in stow- age on ships. it was decided to try Ihlpping by tankers.
