Abvicks from the country report much diss .tisfaction with the legislation of the Peters McLoin-Farquharson party. S'range “8 1 miy seem, the peopl» regard with greater favor the give-away Land Act than they do the Loan Act. It woull be much better, they say, to apply the taxa3 at once than to put off the evil day, kaowing that h+ burden must, in the end, be s9 much the heavier on account of the deliy an] the expense of fl.ating the $185,099 loan. Chey say, tov, thst it would have been more mainly on the part of the present naj city if they had acted ud t» the prin. ciples enunciated by them while in opposi- tion, No one has a wyrd to say for the Loan Act. Bat the Land Act is supposed to be in the interest of ‘“*the poor man whe coulda’t pay his instalments.” Is ir? {t is in the interest of those who have ready money—men who are not pour! Che poor must go to th: money lender and give a mortgsge. Those who were unable to pay without the mort- gage will be unable to pay with it. The result must be that the money-ienders }will receive all the interest that the poor man cap scrape up in the meantime, and will eventually obtain the fee simple of the land. Thus the bill will tend to create again the class of Jarge Iand-owners of whom we hal so much trouble to get rid. [he land act is, indeed, au act to benefit our rich men, to re-create landlordism, and to keep upon the soil a class of persuns who are uufitted to be farmers, and who are a drag upun the prosperity of the Province. Apart from its communistic features, apart from the high premium it gives to default- ers, the land act is one of the worst acts, in principle and in tendency, that was ever passed by our Logislature. When its re- sults are known, it willstink in the nostrils of the people. Defamers of the Dead. Tur efforts of the Geits to defame Sir John Macdonald ani to thwart the great measures which he undertook for the development of Canada, were ceaseless while he livel,—ind they were futile. Futile, also, will ba their scandalous en- deavors to blacken his character, now that he is dead. Their latest attempt—that which had reference to his shares in the Canadian Pacific Railway—-has been promptly foiled by his executors, with the following letter, first published in the Empire : — Sir,—As executors of the will of the late Right Hon. Sir Joha A. Macdonald, we think it proper, having regard to what has appeared within the last few days in the Globe and certain other newepapers, about a clause in Sir John’s will disposing of his Canadian Pacific Railway Stock, to state as follows : 1. That Sir John A. Macdonald was at the time of his death the holderand owner of 122 shares of that stock. 2. That he had purchased said shares in the open market as an investment, aud paid for them outef his own money. 3. That he acquired the stuck in the latter part of 1888. 4. That these shares at their then market value were included in and tormed a part of the item, ‘‘bink shares and other stock,” contained in the schedule filed by us on apply- ing for probate, and which schedule is pub- lished in the Globe of the 12th inst. 5. That except the 122 shares above nen- tioned Sir John A, Macdonald was never at any time possessed of any Canadian Pacific railway stock, either in his own name or in that of any other person, in so far as we know or can ascertain. Yours truly, E. Dewoney, Frep WHITE, Jos. Porz, HvueuJ. Macponacp, Executors of the will of the late Right Hon. Sir John A. Macdonald, A Strange Story. [New York correspondent Halifax Echo } A prominent ecclesiastic in New York told me the other day that Bishop Courtney's illness was largely due to the fact that he had been plunged into financia) difficulties by non-payment of the episcopal salary on the part of the Church of England authorities in Nova Scotia. It was even averred that be spent many months in New York more than a year ago merely for the sake of curtailing expenses, and enjoyed, in the hospitelity of a city friend, comforts which the failure of the synod to give him his due h+d deprived him of in Halifax. I, of course, eomtradicted these extrordinary statements, which had been made to me in a whisper some months before. But it is fully believed among some of his friends that the eloquent Bishop of Nova Scotia is gradually being sabjected te the old-fashioned process of ‘‘ starving ou*,’ and that he has for # long time regretted venturing upon an Episcepal charge ameng Chureh of England people who are un- williag to support either their clergy or their college. -_— ++ For Over Firry Years Mrs. Winsloe’s Soothing Syrup has been used by millions of mothers for their childrea while catting teeth. Sir,—There is oae important matter ia conuection with the tuinel question that should be made clear. Mr. Joha McLean, M. P., in speaking on the subject the other day in the House of Commons savl that the people of the Island wou!d he williug to pay tll freight, &@., parssing throuzh the tunnel. The Finance Minister, Mr, Foster taking the cue probably from Me. MeLzan’s remarks also suggested that the Island people pay toll aud thus help to pay the interest oa the amouat that the tuanel weull cost. Tois isa new ani very obj ec- )tiouable prop sition —one that our people ‘should protest agsiust before it goes auy jturther. If the cuaael will prove « benefit \to Nova Scotia and New Beunswick as /well as other parts of the Dominion, why ishould P. KE. Island firmers, tishermen, &2, bs called on tu pay cull. Give us the }tuanel, if possible, but don’t let the thought {of a heavy toll to be paid on it by P. £. Islauders be entertained for one moment. And [ wou'd turther add that in the event of the tunnel being avtualiy buils, P. 1K. Islanders should not accept as a fulfil- ment of terms of union until after it has proved itself a success. HEdicient steam service, winter and summer, between this Island and the Mainland was proiised us in the Confederation bargain, and this we must have if feasible, and if not feasible we must have the equivalent in hard cash. If the tunnel should ba begun next year it will cake teu or twelve years in which to complete it. During that time our losses and inconveniscnces must continue. If we are entitled to efficient steam service, winter and summer in twelve years’ time, we are entitled to it now, and therefore we should now claim compensation tor non-fulfilment ofterms. Although many are in favor of a tunnel, I believe the large majority of our taxpayers would rather see the interest of the 16 or 18 millions dollars, which the Engineers say it will cost, paid to the Pro- vince annually as increase) subsidy. If this were done we would never have te resort to borrowing money or direct tax- ation, and this is what many of our people want more than a brick tunnel under the Straits of Northumberland.
