Yesterday one of these notes were passed in the store of Mr. John McEachern, Merchant, Queen Street, and another in the store of Mr. S. W. McMurray. Both notes are exactly alike. They beara very ancient appear- ance and have,no doubt, been in circulation for some time. The number on the face of the note is very uneven, and the word “‘two”’ on the back is almost a daub. Bank-tellers can readily detect them by their shoddy ap- pearance and also by the quality of the paper. WE are requested by the Clerk of the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court to correct a statement made by Councillor Hooper, at the City Council meeting, last evening. The Councillor stated—during his remarks on the reduction of the Police foree—that the cases before the Mayistrate’s Court had decreased from twenty cases per day, at the time theincrease of Policemen was made to twenty per mouth, at the present time. This is entirely incorrect. The Clerk in- forms us that he never remembers seeing 20 cases before the Court in one day; and that since October last, the average number of police cases before the Court is eighty per month, besides cases of summons on private complaint, which average about thirty per month. ALL the great professional single scullers of America met at Barrie, Ont., on Monday last to take part in the regatta. There were ten entries for the single scuil race: Hanlon, Ross, Ed. Ross, Morris, Elliot, Plaisted, Hosmer, McKee, Coulter and Luther. After the men were got into line with some trouble they were started by a gun shot, Wallace Ross, Plaisted and Elliot taking the lead, fol- lewed hard by Hanlon, Luther and Hosmer, Ross then won the lead all to himself, showing staying power and compelling Plaisted and. Elliot to moderate their speed. He pulled 36 to the minute, Plais and Hosmer 38, and Hanlan (who was still behind) 36. At the half mile, Ross still led with a strong stroke, with Plaisted second and Hanlon third, while Hosmer was close to him, Luther fifth and Ed- ward Ross about giving up. At the three quarter post Ross was one length ahead of | Hanlan, who was now second, and both were oulling 32, at the mile the positions were sim- ilar, Ross steered out of his course, and in turn ing Hanlan overhauled him, and led from the buoy andfinished six lengths ahead, Ross second and Hosmer third. REDUCTION IN PRICE ! NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC! HE GENERAL MINING ASSOCIA. TION (Limited) beg to intimate to the Public that the price of SYDNEY COAL has been Reduced to $2 per ten of 2240 Ibs., a price which it is hoped will place it within the reach of all consumers, The ng of the new winning at ‘‘ THE SYDNEY MINES” and the fact that the SYDNEY COAL now being shipped is all from the DEEP taken in connection with re- cent improvements in the process of screening, affords purchasers a positive guarantee of the very superior quality and condition of the SYDNEY COAL now offered for sale, It is a well-know fact that for many years t the prices of other Cape Breton coals have abe regulated by the rates fixed for SYDNEY COAL; but while it is true that, other coals, to get a sale at all, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAI, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior lastin qualities of SYDNEY COAL when compar with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and convenience, is in favor of SYDNEY COAL, even at a much higher price. he General mee Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ‘“‘ EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” “‘SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” etc., etc., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coalas SYDNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts to sell coal by such means are only so many admissions on the part of those who make them of the sranDaRpD character of SYDNEY COAL. It has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances parties iving orders to truckmen and others tor SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal.
