T _— SEPTEMBER L&sl1. Steam Communication. Wovutp it not be advisable that the Isjaud steamers should make daily? trips to Pictou landivg, durius the two weeks ef the Dominion Exhibition at Halifax? ~~ orm “The Amende.” Tne way some of eur contemporaries are acting about she made by Tue Exasinrs would be amus- img were it not for the lamentable lack they display with regard to it. The Opposition Press have seized upon a scrap of it which has been telegraphed to the head-ceutre in Toronto; and over it they are showing at ence the poverty of their resources, and their unscrupulous ingenuity, Atthe same time, the Tor- onto Mail, is behaving in a man- ver which would lead one to sup- pos@that the editor ha! gone off on cruise, and left some fuuny man, such as Mark Twain or the genius of the Bur- ington Hawkeye, to “run” the paper waile he is away. Now the matter is a very simple one ; aud we shall easily make it clear. Mr. Mr. Blake and his frieods came here to attack the Government and raise a poli- tical agitationlat atime when as he knew, and as all the Domivion knew, the Hon J. C. Pope, was dangerously ill—ata time when if he had been allowed by his friends to remain within reach of the disturbing influences of a potitical cam- paiga, Mr. Pope’s recovery might, at least, have beea retarded. This ‘s a notorious avd undeniable fact. Though the Island Press could not, for reasons -which are snfficiently evideut, raise a question as to the good taste and good fecling of the accomplished and considerate gentleman who was thns coming into the Prevince, the Toronto Weil could do so with perfect freedom, aad with effect. It in the way which a careful and judicious leader of public opinion would have adopted. ‘The position it took was strong: its language, which should have been so clear that its meaning could not have been mistaken, was turgid and am- biguous. It said that Mr. Blake went in'o the -towa “ where Mr. Pope lay sick aud suffering,” and “ raised a distarbance under his very windows, so to speak ;” and pictured Mr. P'ake as crying out to Mr. Pope: ‘Go to the shades, old man, and boast that Edward Blake sent thee thither.” Now that the Mail has explaiu- ed that these and many other similar ex- pressiens, referred-to Mr. Blake’s cou- duct in coming here at such a time and net to any words or allusions he made while here, the ordinary reader can un- derstand its meaning, aud see the strength of its position. But, is it wonderful that the Opposition press, which seems to have a ee | had a better appreciation of the impossi- | bility of defending Mr. Blake’s conduct on its merits than the Mail itself, should have shirked the issue by pretendiag that the Mail, in the violent and ambiguous language we have quoted, referred te what Mr. Blake said while here, and not to the breach of good fe: liag which he committed in coming here te raise a political disturbance when his political opponent wasl) ing here apparent- ly at the point of death’ Or is it strance that even friends of the Mail, like the writer for Tuz Exammer, were misled? In Tux Examiner of the 16th August there appeared a short comment on the Mail's article, in which it was stated that ths Mail had “taken up the allusions made by Mr. Blake aud his peripatetic comrades respecting the condition of the Minister of Marine,” and that “these allusions were of the most heartless char- acter.” Now, Mr. Blake, while here, made, so far as we can learn, but one allusion to Mr. Pope; and that was, cet tainly, not a * heartless allusion.” In point of fact, there was no truth in THE Examiner's statement ; and, inasmuch as there was no truth in it, it weakened the position taken by the Mail. In justice to Mr. Blake and the Muil, we accord- ingly withdrew it; au at the same time we said :— “* Whether or not Mr. Blake and Mr. Anglin can be justified ‘or coming into this Province andcharging the Government with misleading the people, unnecessarily overburdening the country with taxatien and extravagantly wasting public money, while they knew-well that the only member ef she Goverament in this Province was lying seziously ill, unable te speak or act either in defeace of himself or his col- le: gues, is a question of taste which the Mail or any other paper may diseuss.” Witheut waiting to see what Tue Examines really did say, a writer in the Mai! (who should be looked after) seized upes the scrap paraded in the Opposition Press, and declared forthwith that Tur Examiner's apology was “ absurd, need- less and discreditable,’ To this impu- deuce we need only reply that Tue Exasuner will pot be deterred from doing that which is right either by the persistent misrepreseatations of wily Opponents or the over-hasty censure of political allies who seen to be as blind to th stroug points ia a case as they are ignorant of the commonest rules of jour- nalistic decency, snontipdiiercik, dui A VASMING?ON corrcsp ment declares that rs. This day is semewhat eatlior than last year ; and we are inclined to think will prove more suitable. In most of the parizhes the Harvest Home gervices havo not yet been held, and we doubt nét there will be a general acquiescence in the suggestion that they should be held upon ihe day of public thanksgiving. Most of the Christian bodies have their day of thanksgiving each year, aud these should, if possible, be fixed upen the same day also, fe this way the day fixed by the Gover- nor-in-Conneil will be one of general ob- servance, as it certaioly should be. No peo ple ever had greater cauze for devout thank- fulness to. the Giveref all good than have the people of Canada. The country enjoys in a peculiar degree the natienal blessing of peace and plenty, and freedom from the national evils of war and pestilence. And it is right, at a time when men’s minds are bent upon the werk .of money-making, ‘ s© obtained, and so retained is not an! _hoaor, but a disgrace, and we do not | propose te adopt any such advice.” Un-| ‘fortunately for the would-be Premier, the popular breeze in the present instance, is in accord with enlightened public opinion | ‘throngheut the Dominion. For good aud ‘substantial reasons, the sympathies of the masses are not with the * fly on the ' wheel policy.” | The five years mis-rule of the late ad- ;mivistration will never be forgotten. During that time the farmers will re- | member the low prices for farm produce ; 'the mechanic knows the hard times and iscarcity of money; and the ordinary laborer the self-sacrifice: and grinding ‘economy that were necessary, in s0 many |instauces. in order to keep the County | Court wolf from his door. Truly.may Sir John McDonald and his supporters (be termed the workingmen’s friends. | We do not now hear of hundreds of workingmen surroundiog the office of ‘the Premier demanding laber or bread, jas frequently occurred during the dark — ot mis-rule. No man need be idle jnow,if he is only able and willing to }work. During the sessiun of 1879, it is true, about one hundred laborers assem- | bled in front of Parliament Buildings to (repeat the demand they had ‘so. ire- ‘quently made before. They were po- ‘litely told that the Government had no ‘more right to find employment for the ,poor of Ottawa than for the poor of the city of Montreal or any other city in the | Domision ; but before long it was hoped | that the Policy, which was about “being inaugerated, would bring capital into the country; and give employment to the thousands who were then in mingled feelings of hope. and despair, erying for |work or bread. Have these hopes, | been realized? There is not a can- ‘did men in the country, from the skilled |artisan down to the commonest laborer, but will auswer in the affirmative. The Rev. G, M. Grant, in the Toronto Globe, bears testimony to the great hum out West. In Winnipeg, he states, labor- ing men get $2 and skilled mechanics get €2.50 aday. At this rate of wages a man can earn, in a little over three mouths, the price of one hundred acres of free Jand in a Prevince unsurpassed for agricultural capabilities in any part of the world., In the older Provinces the demand for laber of all kinds is unprece- dented; business men are prospering ; and the good crops, wi'h the prospeet of a brisk trade in farm produce this Fall, are calculated to place our Island fasm- ersin a position of independence never before atiained in the history of the Provivee. In consequence of a'l this increased end inereasing prosperity, the Opposilion leader, i his Maritime trip, experienced very dail weather, with the wiad dead ahead. Despising the popular breeze, with vo faith in the infallibility of the masses, with supreme contempt for ail things here below, exvept the wise argu- mentative, ‘self-sufficient doctrinaire himself, Mr. Blake is now vo doubt turn- iag his attention again to legal lore, hav- ing discovered that his talents are more appreciated by the wearers of the ermine than by the masses. Fant GRANVILLE, the Foreign Secretary, | was defendant, the other day, at Hanlev, 4 when everything indicates a period of great | commeretal and industrial advancement, i that we should remember that since the world began abiding national prosperity has been contingent upon the national recog- pition of Ged’s Providence, and_ the national obedience to God's laws. trust most sincerely that the day set apart will be generally observed as one of. rever- ontial thanksgiving. > er A Pre-Adamic Foseil. (A ** Rambler,” in the Moncton Times.) The exeellence of the road, however, and the good care taken of the Island geperally by the Dominion Government, have not wholly destroyed the avocation of the Grit grumbler. At a dinner party of seven | was assured by no less than three that the Is!and people, if they could, would cheer- fully give up the railway if they could at the same time get separated from Canada, and restored to the condition of happiness, which the Island enjoyed ‘when land troubles were rampant and communication was exclusively offected by wheels and boats. ‘This reminds me that not long ago I met a Monettenianm who believed that the houses built the last few years in Moncton, and the increased business done, was not an evidence of progress; that the place was as well off twelve years ago ae now! Yours, efc., CIrizEN. Ch’town, Sept. 17, 1881. T'o the Editor of the xaminer. S1a,.—L should like to knew what do the City Councillors wean in allowing the acting City Surveyor to macadamize the streets in the way he is doing with old tin pans, betues, ete. These things, mixed with night soil, are not the material to make good streete with, and yet hundreds of dol- lars of the Citizen’s taxes are epent in that way. I see that they have again com- menced operations on Prince street. It seems that all the yards -were eleaned out in the¥spring, but as they are now after accumulating a large amount of dirt, they need to be cleansed again, When other City Surveyors were in power, they used to eut down the hilis, and bicld up the low streets, but now the order of things is reversed, as large quantities of soft clay and stone have been hauled to raise aa street twelve or fifteen inches, which, I think, is nearly the hivhest street in the city and did not require to be built ap. The upper port of Euston street Ladroit, it was necessary to macadamize it in a proper way; but half the money laid out there woud have been suill- cient, if the water got into the box drain } should like to knew which way it should run? I do not think it either fair or just that nearly all the meney allowed for street purposes should be laid out in one or two places by raising the streets unnecessarily high. You will eee on the same street, a few huvdted yards built up, and other places left low. There are other streets that don’t get ten doliare Jaid out on them for repairs fer twe or three years together, and yet the citizens on those streets pay hundreds of dollars into the eity revenve, and get nothing in return, not even a decent sidewalk. There are many of our citizens who would like to know what has beeome of all the plank bronght this eum mer, for there dees not appear to be ore third of them used on the streets. Is it possible they are like the spikes? Nobody sgems to knew anything about them, and nebedy seems to be accountable for the meedless extravagance. And the interest on the city debt at the present rate of doing things, will soon be ten thousand dollars a year, and in many cases the preperties are than they rent for. For the sont I will leave this matter in the hands cf the sitizens to deal with the councillors as they have justly merited, at the proper | time. IL remain, Yours, ete., A TAXPpavyeEr.
